We had the good fortune of connecting with David Kabanda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

My thought process was always trying to find a solution for people. I used to go to the barbers and wait hours to get a haircut and sometimes it wasn’t even the best haircut or just a little touch up . So I wanted to create a business where I’m able to not only cut people and make it convenient for them but deliver the highest quality haircuts. Whether I was a barber myself or owned a barbershop , the idea remained the same .

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I’m very proud of my journey so far because of where I came from. My start was difficult I was broke had no money, no experience and no equipment . I used my friends clippers to start cutting hair and the only previous experience I had was cutting my own hair which is fundamentally different . This was a tough period for me, I used to travel to cut people and I was barely making ends meet . Consequently, this experience taught me that there is no short cut to success and every successful person has to establish a foundation . I’ve learnt that everyone’s journey is different and your greatest competition should be yourself. If you always compare yourself to someone else you’ll always find someone greater than you but if you try and better the person you were yesterday you’ll always be striving to achieve more. You set your own standard.

My story is not of one who’s made it and has got to where he needs to be but it’s of great encouragement that you can start from nothing and someone like me who learnt a skill (cutting hair ) from YouTube is able to achieve beyond expectations. My motto is ‘ Touching souls’ because my purpose is far greater than what I do , it’s imbedded in who I am. It’s for the future generation and gifted to me by God. There is more to come. Remember the name . Kabandacoupe 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I would love to give a shout out to Jesus Christ my Lord and saviour as without him I wouldn’t have the strength and skill to be able to what I do at a high level . I also want to thank friends and family but in particular my good friend Boni because he was the one who pushed me to start cutting hair and I started with him and then expanded with other people. I started by cutting my own hair but he wanted me to start cutting his hair and the rest is history.
