We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellison Keomaka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellison, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is inherent in the creative process. Following my intuitions and stepping boldly into the unknown is the only way i have learned to create. The constant state of riding the edge between embracing new ideas and following through with them is an art on its own. For me, knowing myself emotionally, physically, and mentally gives me the capacity to turn the fear of risk into new worlds of possibility. It’s often easy to settle into an idea or method of the way I create. Once I find a technique or style that I feel comfortable with, its time to take a risk and change.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an artist comes down to the moment you decide to call yourself one. There are no rules to follow or paths to pursue. This ideal will offer up pain, joy, staring at walls, daydreaming, fulfillment, and much more. Each one of us has a unique perspective that we each share through our own mediums. As a visual artist, I have found that my role in the journey to create objects and images is to be a student to the world around me. Stay out of the way and let it flow. Try less and do more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many gems in Az that my top spots to recommend are: MIM (Musical instrument museum. One of the best-curated experiences and music is a beautiful thing. Collectors Market place. A treasure trove of vintage and modern pop culture collectibles. Pizzeria Bianco, the only thing to say is the chef’s kiss. OTTO Car Club an amazing private facility for motorsports enthusiasts. Bicycle Haus as the top spot for cycling and great people. Any of the amazing Optima building projects for there modern aesthetic and attention to detail to the living experience. Phoenix Art Museum, love to visit periodically to pay homage to the amazing creatives that they showcase. Out in nature, there are some incredible places to visit from the Grand Canyon to Sedona.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We all are connected and without the people in our lives, we would not see our full potential. In the order of our paths crossing; My Father with his own brand of mental confidence. He gave me the first hope that I could push the limits of possibility. Sam P. for his golf instruction but more so the mindset that it takes to win. Dave and Julie for sparking my early dreams. Sam and Val for giving me projects I had no idea how to do but ended up figuring out. All of the men and women that work at the businesses that supplied the materials, printing, and resources necessary to grow. Everyone who has trusted me with their stories to create something meaningful that we could share. Betsy, Ben, Eli, and Mark for his ability to go above and beyond as a mentor, advocate for excellence, and his passion for the arts. David, Eileen, David Jr, Tara, Misty, and Viv for being an amazing part of my life and family. My wife Lauren who empowers me in ways I could never imagine.
