We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorissa Kyle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew I always wanted to be in the beauty industry but for a makeup artist sometimes the furthest we think we can go is freelancing. You are your own boss and just do your own thing but for me I wanted to do more than just that. I wanted to not only help women look beautiful on the outside after a service but to feel beautiful and confident after they left me. Here we are in 2020 and women are still struggling with confidence, for identity, and the feeling of beauty and I want to be a part of that change so I put most of my focus on trying to create an experience or products that will encourage them that they are gorgeous humans.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well the saying, “if it was easy everyone would be doing it”, is beyond the truth. It has not been easy at all and I feel like for the beauty industry specifically makeup artists, there are so many of us now. The constant feeling of competition and pressure of staying relevant can be overwhelming for sure. I’m so proud of where I am at now and happy that I’ve been growing so much not only personally but business wise, I’ve doubled almost tripled my work in a little less than a year but with growth comes growing pains and that’s the not so easy part. I am currently looking to find artists that do amazing work but will represent my business, know my heart for my clients and carry that out day in/day out. It’s not an easy task to duplicate yourself but I know the right people will come along to help the HEYLO brand expand even more outside of Arizona than it is now. Plus I’m learning as I go the right no is better than the wrong yes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As for someone who was born and raised in Arizona, it’s been awesome to see so many great places come up that I find myself constantly going back. Coffee is a must so hitting up Starbucks is a given. You can’t go wrong with brunch and The Lola has the best brunch menu in my opinion plus what friend is going to say no to bottomless mimosas. Some great lunch and happy hour places I love are Limon Urban Kitchen, Breakfast Kitchen Bar, and Sol Mexican Cocina, I’ve been realizing over the years the more people visit AZ the more people love the Sedona area. I mean what’s not to love but it’s definitely made the list to take visitors. The Hudson and Creekside have some delicious entrees and you can’t not go to any scenic view of the Red Rocks. Maybe see the Grand Canyon if they are up for it since I’ve never been. Depending on what time of year it is maybe see football or hockey game and hit McFaddens at Westgate after. If eating or drinking isn’t on the agenda, then shopping, bowling, Topgolf or something fun for everyone.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh man, I am so fortunate to have many supporters and mentors on this journey….so get ready! For starters, I’d have to say my parents. My mom and dad are not creatives or have that “Tigger” personality like I do but no matter what they have supported every dream and wild idea. My dad’s unconditional love and patience with my mother’s endless encouragement and constructive wisdom, I wouldn’t be able to see my dreams and plans come to fruition, and some even sooner than expected. I am grateful for the close friends like Rachel, Emily, Alexis and Leslie who are like sisters, for constantly encouraging me to keep going especially in the moments of uncertainty or telling me hell no when I’m being outlandish. Fellow creative colleagues such as Ariana Jones, Emina Omeragic, Ella Martin, and Jess Hutchens, who I have worked with at various points throughout my career. I am so grateful they continue to cheer me on in the present day and excited for the work we have for the future. Over the last year, I’ve been beyond thrilled to be one of thirty for AZ Foothills 2020 Beautifiers, featured in Voyage to share my story, guest speaker on Finding AZ Podcast with Jose & Britt after I got her ready for their wedding, connecting with exceptional business owners in Phoenix and across North America to support each other, link arms and achieve greatness together. I know there are more fantastic people I could name, but I’ll definitely run out of space!
