We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Mostofizadeh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in northern New Hampshire in an idyllic small town with 3 siblings. Being the third child (and youngest girl), there are not a ton of photographs of just me growing up. My dad had a really nice camera that he used for work and sometimes brought out on the weekends at home. My parents hired a professional photographer once in my youth and I cherish the family photo that came from that day. I put a lot of stock in having family photos taken (and printed) because I see the value in having these memories as an adult.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I officially started my business is Nevada in 2009 and have since operated in NH, FL, and now AZ. Despite a very saturated market here in the Phoenix area, I have been able to build a wonderful client base in the last 2 and a half years. I have a daughter with special needs and several years ago one of her friend’s parents told me that she doesn’t bother with family photos because her special needs kiddo was “too difficult” during photo sessions. This stuck with me and I have since offered discounts to families with children with special needs. I also worked hard to make sure that these families felt comfortable reaching out to me for photos. Last year I became accredited by Special Kids Photography of America and just this summer I received my Autism Certificate from IBCCES. My business caters to people of all abilities and I am proud of what I am able to offer at this point, even as I continue to grow as a person and a photographer.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend has visited! Whenever we have guests in town we hike in the Superstitions and head out to the lakes with either the kayaks or the ski boat. Other than that we spend a lot of time in the backyard; BBQing and swimming and relaxing with a beer!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family deserves all the recognition. My mom bought me my first camera when I was 15 and my dad always assured me that I could be whatever I wanted to be. My siblings and husband are my cheerleaders, and my kids are my muses.
