As an artist I have often asked myself about the purpose of art. Despite the role of art and artists has changed over the centuries, and is different in each society, I think there is a common ground in the creation of artifacts: they are made to establish the parameters through which we relate to reality. The Paleolithic cave paintings were ritual images that had a specific meaning for their communities, as well as the religious altarpieces from the Middle Ages or a Chinese terracotta vase. In 2021, Billboard magazine released findings of a 10 year study and survey conducting analysis of the entire music industry. They found that only that 14% of songwriters were women. The gender equality gap in production, song writing and entertainment does stop there. even fewer of that 14% are disabled, minorities or plus sized. This not only makes what I do important but also rare. Sadly the public being used to only supporting what they have normalized – this makes me marginalized and unicorn as a plus sized, women of color that produces, records and performs. Read more>>
