We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Lapekas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Which business? I have been self employed for over 45 yrs. With a number of different businesses. All of them were for what I saw as a need for the target customer in the area.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Current business, Big Ass Equipment Rentals & Sales, We rent Big Ass Equipment not little shit. I am most proud of my son and daughter who are both entrepreneurs.
I saw a need in our area for an equipment rental business, and knowing my son and his wife was set to take over I decided it was time to start the next chapter and so became Big Ass Equipment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Eat, Bonkers, Blue Budha, Ranch House Grill, State 48, Dara Thai. See Horseshoe Bend, Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons.
Take them to Lake Powell Paddleboards and get them on the early morning Tour. It is as near to a religious experience on this earth as you can find. Introduce them to Max and Libby.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mother and Father. They taught me the meaning and purpose of work. As a little kid I wanted a bike or something like that I think it was. My dad said to me, Joe, you can have anything you want! Wow was I excited, then he added “once you have earned it” . Fortunately both parents were self employed also and with my dad’s construction company and all the others that followed there was always work to do. Even if it was as simple as carrying fuel cans out to the machinery in the field, or rolling sod out or raking burn piles. Always something to do to earn money.
