Meet Richard Glick | Abstract Modernist Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Glick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Richard, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I grew up with two older sisters. One introduced me to Picasso and other 20th century artists at a very early age. For reasons I cannot explain, I was then, and continue to be, drawn to the art of the 20th century. I spent a career as a furniture and commercial interior designer-a profession that blends creativity with business. There is a business side to being a painter, but painting, and making art, are more fully immersive and creatively satisfying processes than executing projects as a designer. My current work belongs to both the 20th century and today. It’s infused with my design sensibilities-balance, color, texture , scale, media and space-while harkening back to the work to the work I have admired my entire life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My approach to art has evolved significantly over time. I find that embracing art through the lens of maturity and experience enriches the creative process profoundly. As I’ve grown and encountered the various facets of life, i’ve developed a heightened sensitivity to the intricate emotion and subtleties within every brushstroke and painting. This experience has cultivated a deep understanding of color, form, and composition, enabling me to connect more profoundly with may artistic intent. My art has evolved to convey layers of memories and emotions, reflecting the tapestry of my life’s journey. It has transformed from being solely a visual delight into a reflective mirror, offering both contemplation and a boundless source of inspiration. On another note, the promotion and sales of my artwork has been one of the most challenging professional experiences.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would first start out with brunch at Restoration Hardware in the Gold Coast and to see their amazing store. Then visit The Art Institute to tour some of their amazing collections. My favorite sections is the new Modern wing and the Impressionists area. Probably then off to Cindy’s Rooftop restaurant in the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel. Maybe drinks and dinner and also to see amazing views of the city and lake. Another day can be strolling along the lake and touring the stores on Michigan Avenue. Perhaps stopping by The Museum of Contemporary Art. Then off to Millennium Park to see The Cloud Gate and other art installations. Fun to see a concert at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Perhaps pizza at Giordano’s for a great treat?
Other fun sites are Lincoln Park, Lincoln Park Zoo and maybe dinner at Mon Ami Gabi for a great French meal..
Always fun to see the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Maybe dinner at The Gage?
Going to a Cubs game and hanging at the bars and restaurants in the area? Check out Swift and Sons Tavern an Oyster Bar may a great option.
Getting in a car and touring the North Shore is so amazing. Seeing Bahai House of Workshop, Northwestern University and the mansions along the lake is an amazing experience. Having brunch at Walker Brothers Original Pancake House in Wilmette is always a treat. Try the large apple pancake. Also, check out all the amazing beaches in the area.
I am hoping my friend really likes the arts and has lots of energy. Also, this tour needs to be in the summer and autumn months. I think I need a nap after all this exploration…

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
