Meet Elizabeth Black & Megan Moore | Podcasters

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Black & Megan Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth Black & Megan Moore, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We realize the name “Beheaded” is a little startling, but we wanted to stand out! To give more of a back story, one of our first social activities together was going to the Arizona Renaissance Festival where we paid the extra $5 to view the infamous and gruesome torture museum. Afterward, we admitted to each other we were both strangely fascinated with the dark stories of medieval and Renaissance crime and punishment methods. We found a common ground with being equally horrified and mesmerized by executions like Anne Boleyn, Marie Antoinette, and William Wallace. This led us to realize that some of the darkest moments in history are the most intriguing because while they are in fact disturbing, they paint an intimate narrative of who these victims were and the trials that they faced. Our podcast takes a light-hearted approach to some very serious topics and add a comedic element to real-life historical events.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We wanted to create an approachable podcast about the darker side of history. We span all types of historical executions, from ancient times to World War II, but we tend to favor the more notorious Tudor era tales under King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I’s reign. Our intention is to spark an interest for those who may not be as familiar with these historical figures, but we add our own colorful commentary and dorky modern references to make history less boring. As co-hosts, it helps that we are also best friends! Most times we forget the microphone is even there and it becomes more of a natural conversation that we hope our listeners feel a part of.
At first, building the podcast was slow-moving. Our first “breakthrough” was when a historian who worked at the Tower of London reached out to not only compliment our work, but ask for a collaboration. From there, our show became more well-known to not only amateur enthusiasts, but also to notable British historians. Despite the fact that we’ve had several prestigious guests on our show to give their professional take on various topics, our end goal has always been to connect with anyone who has an interest in the macabre.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have a lot of listeners around the world who are unfamiliar with what Arizona is like, so we constantly have to paint a picture of life in the Southwest! We would absolutely take our friends to the Pinal County Historical Museum to show them the creepy artifacts of Western history. We would also have to direct them to the Book Gallery which has locations in both Mesa and Phoenix. This unique spot has thousands of books on any topic, specializing in antique and rare finds.
We would also love to show them quirky speakeasies such as Rough Rider, Undertow, and the White Rabbit for some handcrafted cocktails and specialty snacks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To all the history-lovers who appreciate a comedic spin and like to be entertained by the dark stories of the past.
