We had the good fortune of connecting with Subspace and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Subspace, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Subspace started because a small group of artists needed space outside of their homes to create. Members come from all backgrounds and different upbringings. We pride ourselves on cultivating a community that embraces diversity and encourages creativity through various mediums. The initial idea of affordable artist studios has grown and shifted to include so much more. Through the years, this collective has built a community, started a gallery, and expanded to include more studio spaces than before. Our main goal is supporting emerging artists; creating an approachable outlet for people who are just stepping into a creative identity. We aspire to make room for those with marginalised and diverse stories to share.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Subspace began as an empty basement in a 100-year-old Warehouse. The original members built walls, added lighting, and even filled holes in the ground with concrete. Over the last 6 and a half years, there have been many challenges that the space and the people within it have faced. From floods to a pandemic, the artists in the collective have carried subspace through a lot. In just the last year, we have gained a wheelchair accessible ramp, a bigger event and gallery space, and built studios that offer more privacy. We’ve all gained so much from the experiences we’ve shared here. The thing we keep learning over and over is how much better off we are when we engage the community and when more people are involved. We have studio spaces available for rent and are always looking for people to host gallery shows, classes, performances and workshops.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
