The Risk Series: how do you think about risk?

Risk is the most common topic that comes up in our conversations with entrepreneurs and so each week we ask entrepreneurs to talk to us on the record about how they think about risk.

What some folks might consider risks, I have not. My career included a major switch that required returning to school at 30 (graphic artist to paper chemist), time in new field research, a “greenfield” start up for a fortune 500, and a restructure of a regional business. Taking risk is absolutely necessary in order to succeed in anything worthwhile in life. After taking the time to sit down and writing out all the jobs that I have had (32), I finally realized working for someone else was not for me. I decided to take a leap of faith and sacrificed my comfort for challenge and started 3 businesses which were not successful. I threw dart after dart at the board until I hit a bullseye in Phoenix, AZ. The biggest risk I have taken is jumping into an industry I know nothing about. I moved from Michigan to Arizona and within a few months, I became the CFO of a record label; Majic•Musick•Records•LLC and the co-founder of a nonprofit organization; Fatefund. I continue to study daily, gaining knowledge on how to help businesses scale towards financial independence.
