We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Frumkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Persistence, by a mile. Creatively, there are always going to be times where you’re not feeling like you’re able to create your best work. I’ve found that in these times grounding myself and reminding myself why I started my journey and why I got into photography in the first place really helps me. Sometimes it’s ok to step away from editing for a little bit to clear your head in order to produce better work when you come back to it. As for actually getting clients, the only reason that I ever got clients to begin with is persistence. I was working my 9-5 over the summer, sending emails to potential clients on my lunch breaks, when I got home from work, and any other free time I got. I got told no over 50 times and didn’t even get responses from at least another 100 companies. I quickly learned I wouldn’t get anywhere without persistence and that’s what has carried me throughout my photography journey thus far.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I really started my photography journey around 2 years ago when bought my first film camera my freshman year of college. I shot my first roll of film on a cross-country roadtrip with my dad hitting multiple national park and the camera in my hands just felt right from the start. I then starting shooting more and more film on various hikes and trips out in nature with my friends and that’s when I really started to take it seriously and got into editing my work. I soon fell in love with the whole process of creating images I love and it felt great that others felt the same way. Fast forward to this summer where I decided to really make my photography into a business. Most of my free time this summer outside of my day job was spent putting together my portfolio, searching for potential clients, then reaching out to them. At first, I began with a few unpaid clients to get some portfolio work and then in August I landed my first paid client. It was definitely not an easy journey to get to that point as I’d sent hundreds of emails. spent hours on hours emailing brands, and got told no countless times but it was absolutely rewarding. It took a lot of persistence and reminding myself why I began photography to continue on and I’m so glad I did. Now, a few months later I’ve launched a holiday sale for my print shop I’ve started up and couldn’t be more excited to be exploring and shooting film around Europe for the majority of this coming spring semester.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve been in Tucson for a little over two years now and absolutely don’t know everything there is to know about the area, but I for sure have some good recommendations of things I like. The main things that I’d really want to hit on throughout the trip would be hiking and food. Tucson is known for it’s amazing cuisine, specifically Mexican food and we would definitely have to check that out. Another thing that I obviously love about Tucson is the scenery / hiking in the area; I would make sure that we checked out some hiking and places I love to take pictures such as the Starr Pass trails and Mt. Lemmon.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say that a group of people that I would contribute my success to especially in photography are my friends and family. Many of my friends encourage me to keep going with my photography by supporting my journey in so many different ways. My friends and family have both been my models for brand shoots, support my print shop, as well as just simply interacting with my posts on my social media. These people help me keep going with photography each and every day and I couldn’t be here with out them.
