We had the good fortune of connecting with Mari McWilliams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mari, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
To me, success is a feeling, not just about money or fame. It’s about doing something because you love it and not just for the outcome. For example, I published a book, and even if I didn’t sell a single copy, I’d still feel proud because I actually finished and published it. That’s success to me. It’s not about profit it’s about impact. Like when I see a kid’s face light up when they get a snow-cone or a free toy from my business, that makes me feel successful.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Mari’s Gold, I am passionate about making every event personal and memorable. My adaptability allows me to cater to any setting from backyard gatherings to large school events. I offer a customized menu featuring 20 flavors.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come. What started in my backyard, selling snow cones to friends and family, has grown into partnerships with several organizations, serving over 1,000 cones. This growth wasn’t easy; it required resilience, dedication, and a positive mindset. Learning from my mistakes and staying committed helped me overcome challenges along the way.

One important lesson I’ve learned is that not everyone will be happy for your success. It’s crucial to stay focused, self-driven, and motivated, regardless of external opinions. I believe it’s better to give than to receive. Bringing joy to others through our snow cones is what we’re all about.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend visited for a week, I’d plan a mix of fun activities to showcase the best of Phoenix and its surroundings. We’d start with the First Friday in downtown Phoenix, where streets come alive with local artists, live music, and food vendors, offering a real taste of the city’s history unique vibe. Then, we’d head to Tempe Town Lake for rollerblading along the scenic paths, enjoying the beautiful waterfront views. We’d take a trip to Lake Havasu for some exciting wakeboarding, soaking up the sun and water. Throughout the week, we’d explore different eateries, hang out at cool spots, and experience the unique culture and natural beauty that Arizona has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I want to thank God none of this would be possible without Him. I also want to shout out Restore ReBuild Renew, Restoring Arizona, Faith Christian Center (FCC), After School Allstar Kids, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women – PHX and Suewong McFadden Academy. Each of them has played a special role in my journey. And of course, a huge thank you to my friends, family, and every single person who has supported me along the way. Your love, encouragement, and belief in me means everything.
