We had the good fortune of connecting with Farah Sutton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Farah, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The greatest parenting impact has been daily interaction through dialog, activities and instruction. My daughter’s development and education has invariably been a priority for me. We have always talked, sang, danced and explored together. When she was little, she would sit on my lap and I would read my graduate coursework aloud and talk-out my research papers as I wrote, so she could hear. She was my little study buddy. Later when she started school, we practiced her reading and math skills at the dining table every evening before dinner. An integral part of my parenting style has been to model a love of life, learning and altruism. Now at 14, my daughter is college-bound next academic year, I strive to provide opportunities for discussion and perspective with her whether that be through routine day to day occurrences, day trips exploring Arizona or larger international trips. She always knows through our daily interactions that I love and believe in her. Without a doubt, spending quality time together has been my greatest impact.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. I love working with clients – everyone from real estate investors to first time home buyers to help make their vision and wishlist a reality. There are a plethora of real estate agents in Arizona but what sets me apart is my education and experience. I have a PhD and MBA and a graduate certificate in GIS, giving me an analytical advantage that provides a more holistic and nuanced approach to real estate. My travels to nearly half the countries of the world have also helped fuel my understanding and appreciations for international cultures, architecture and design elements. Thus my background and experience coupled with my fondness for design and architecture creates an advantageous combination as a real estate agent and is an asset for the clients I work with.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week is a good amount of time to enjoy some of the hustle and bustle in the city while still being able to head up north and see all of the awe inspiring sights our state has to offer. My daughter and I enjoy being outdoors; we often take little road trips full of hiking, kayaking, off-roading and outdoor activities around Arizona. I would suggest outdoor activities for my visitors as well. There are too many to list but Sedona, Flagstaff, Prescott, Cottonwood/Jerome and the Grand Canyon are all great for out of state guests. Locally, you can usually find me hiking South Mountain or Camelback. As far as dining and entertainment, Arcadia, Biltmore and Tempe are where I frequent. It is a bit different now with the pandemic, but I like to be active and have fun so places with games are where I like to go. For example, in Arcadia, Little Woody’s and The Porch, or in Tempe, Culinary Dropout are all great places I like to go with friends. Two of my go-to restaurants are Cocina Madrigal and Chanpen Thai Cuisine for a quaint atmosphere with delicious food and friendly staff. I also love to entertain and cook, so I would definitely be doing a meal or two at home with the fire pits and outdoor games in my yard.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents definitely deserve credit for their unwavering love and support throughout my successes and challenges. I am fortunate to have them for encouragement, advice and to talk through ideas. In addition to my parents, I am lucky to have built a network of friendships. I feel truly blessed for all of the positivity and amazing people in my life.
