Meet Briggett Wills | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Briggett Wills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Briggett, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When deciding to start your own business, no matter how big or small, it can be difficult to balance your current life, and your life while starting a business. I decided to start my business when my daughter was just a year old, and had to start slow to make sure I could still focus on her, my family and still get my business off of the ground. Once I started my photography business I had my son two and a half years later, and within the first 8 years business had picked up, and began to take up too much of my time. Once I realized I was doing too much and was starting to no longer enjoy what I was doing, I took a step back, focused on my family again and had one of the best years I have had in a long time. I have learned to balance my business better in the past two years and have gone back to enjoying it once again. While I have the luxury to take breaks from photography as I still have my full time job, it is something that makes me happy, and something I never want to give up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I started my business I knew what I wanted, but had no idea how to get there. I tried to do everything by the book and needed all photos and sessions to be perfect. I quickly learned that with photography, each session, client and day will be different. The only way for me to succeed was to let each session flow in whichever direction it needed to go. Once I started to learn this, my creativity was not only able to show more and more, but myself and my clients were able to be creative and direct their sessions and enjoy them even more.
Once I stopped trying to make things perfect, and learned to take my time, explain what I was doing and involve my clients, the better the memories I was creating not only in my prints, but during the sessions. Remembering that no one is perfect, and that the only way to get better is to keep trying and continuing to learn from each and every mistake.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I currently live in Sun Prairie Wisconsin. I love the area and we are very close to Madison. If I had a friend visiting the area I would be sure to take them to Devil’s Lake for some hiking, swimming and relaxing. I enjoy the outdoors and love a place to just relax when I am able.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a major shoutout to my husband/partner of 19 years. He bought me my first camera and has continued to support my growth and crazy schedule from the start. I would also like to give a giant shoutout to all of my friends, family and clients. Without their constant support, constructive feedback, trusting me to capture their small and large life moments, I would never have made it this far.
