We had the good fortune of connecting with Trina Lyn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trina, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I think an inquisitive nature has helped out a lot. I love to just talk to people about the things I’m curious in, especially pertaining to business and art. I reach out to my peers and talk shop about what’s working and what isn’t working with our businesses. I participate in my local community forums and offer my creative services when applicable. If I’m intrigued about a potential opportunity or business I’d like to partner with, I e-mail them! It seems really simple, but many doors will open if you simply ask to be let in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being an artist is never easy! You just have to keep putting yourself out there, despite this fact.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Vivian Moultrie Park off of King Street, in Charleston, South Carolina. I helped come up with the design concept and personally contributed two of the murals! It is the first series of underpass murals ever painted in South Carolina, and its goal is to bring beauty to the urban landscape. Grab some Rodney Scott’s BBQ from down the road and enjoy a lovely picnic at this park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s one very big help I would like to highlight in particular:

A major turning point in my career was when my local city started taking a new found interest in funding public art initiatives. Since then, I have been given multiple chances over the years to work on various creative projects for the city.

It is so, so vital to artists for there to be municipal opportunities available for them, either in the form of dedicated public galleries, artist residencies, or through urban beautification efforts. Artists deserve a chance to be respected and fiscally supported by their trade. There should always be room for art to thrive in our modern culture.

To that end, I want to thank my particular stomping grounds, the City of Charleston and the City of Goose Creek, for being forward thinking in this area. I’m thankful for the champions in their ranks that continue to be outspoken about funding artists, gallery spaces and other major projects in the future.

If this sounds like something you want in your own town, I encourage you to write your local congress person, mayor, or city representative, and encourage them to meaningfully support the creative arts. There’s a lot about it to be thankful for.
