We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin Chandler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always asked myself “What am I doing to help humanity? What seeds have I planted? How am I leaving this world better than when I arrived?”. So I wanted to create a brand that did exactly that, plant seeds that’ll raise the consciousness of it’s consumer. In some way or another, Organic BrowNY advocates healthy living.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
“I didn’t quit! That’s the only distinguishing quality from me and anyone else going through this.” —Nipsey Hussle
How did I get to where I am today, professionally? Hard work, following my passion, sacrificing comfort and most of all adjusting. It’s definitely easier said than done!
I overcame challenges because I never lost my vision. When I have a goal set, I’m going to achieve it —I have to, I will! I saw it already so I knew/know there’s work that is required in order to get what I’ve visioned. It’s a law of the universe. One of my designs from Organic BrowNY reads “Energy flows where the focus is.”, with that said I’ve focused my energy on achieving not failure. I don’t believe in losing because I’m always learning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it’s Phoenix, AZ then I’d take them to Moira Sushi Bar & Kitchen on McKinley — I love their food, drinks and service. The people there are amazing, it’s a great vibe! As far as what I like to do for fun, I love being in nature so I’d go to the mountains or hike/bike a trail. Of course if it’s not too hot lol! Merely the drive to the upper side of Salt River is a beautiful experience alone.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I actually can’t single one person nor thing out. Everything and everyone I’ve encountered during my journey has played apart of where/who I am today. Missy Elliott for allowing me to be apart of her team in 2010, Young Houston Magazine for giving me an opportunity to showcase my skills/talents in 2014. Being a fan of Nipsey Hussle, The Marathon Clothing along with his music, watching him plant seeds and uplift his community. Moving myself to Texas, living in NYC and even Trinidad & Tobago —I’ve learned so much from my life experiences, good and bad. Alchemy.
