Meet Missy Johnson | Homeschool Teacher, Tutor and Special Needs Mom

We had the good fortune of connecting with Missy Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Missy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Surprisingly, the thought process behind starting my own business was easy. It was something I just knew I had to do. I have worked in the mental health and education fields for over a decade and there was no job or agency that allowed me to help children and families the ways they truly needed. My passion is, and has always been, to be a helper.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a single mom to a special needs son is not easy, but it has been one of my greatest blessings. I share our journey to help others become more educated, aware and more accepting of those who have special needs. I also strive to provide advocacy and support.
I educate “beyond four walls”.
The main services my business provides are tutoring, intervention services, social emotional skill development and family life coaching. I work with children who have Autism, ADHD, Emotional, Intellectual and Specific Learning Disabilities, Developmental Delays, Gifted students, Homeschool students, Early Intervention, Struggling Readers etc. However, it goes way beyond those simple terms. I develop unique and individualized services for each student, while being mindful of each families specific needs and goals. I intertwine social emotional skills into scholastic education to ensure each child flourishes in both their academic and mental health needs. I pride myself on the strong bonds and rapport I have with each and every one of my students and their families.
I also develop and sell my own curriculum, learning games, educational activity sets and more!
Even if you do not need any services that my business provides, my hope is that you will follow along on our journey of special needs homeschooling and adventure on Facebook or Instagram! On both platforms I provide free and consistent education, support, fun, laughs – while bringing awareness of special needs, homeschooling and education.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have previously lived in Hawaii, Texas and Illinois but Arizona is (by far) my absolute favorite state! The mountain scenery and sunsets are beyond breathtaking. One of my favorite things to do here is hiking. I have been on countless hikes, but Pinnacle Peak is my number choice to take out of town visitors. Old Town Scottsdale has always been one of my preferred areas to take visitors. While there are so many choices in Old Town, you can’t go wrong eating dinner on the patio at Olive and Ivy, walking the lit up streets, enjoying the art walk and even venturing to the historic Rusty Spur for some live country music. If you follow along on my Facebook or Instagram you will see my son and I are constantly on adventures here in Arizona. So definitely check it out if you need some new ideas… there are just way too many to list here.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The one person who deserves the biggest shoutout in my success “story” is my son, Dominic. My story is not just about me. I named my business The Adventures of Mom and Dom – because that it just what it is. I would not be who I am today without my son. He has taught me more about life than any book or teacher. He is my biggest supporter, my loudest fan and pushes me to continue helping and educating as many children and families as possible
