Meet Ike Devji | Asset Protection Attorney for High Net Worth Individuals

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ike Devji and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ike, what do you attribute your success to?
Focus. I love seeing people succeed, so twenty years ago I made a conscious decision to concentrate my legal practice on Asset Protection and helping successful entrepreneurs, business owners and physicians like those in my family and the people I grew up around, protect what they built.
This was initially limiting as there are many other areas of law that are more in demand by consumers and wider in scope in terms of qualified clients, but after being the “bad guy” on the litigation side of the law early in my career, I decided that I would be happiest and most effective protecting people and their hard earned success.
This narrow focus allowed my to understand not just the legal planning required but why it was required, meaning the wide scope of risks successful people face, and all the ways to mange and mitigate those risks. It also gives my clients the benefit of 20 years of perfect “20/20 hindsight”, having seen the real world exposures and crises faced by thousands of clients we work with. All this informs what we do and how we plan.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am proud of the way we have changed peoples lives, helped reduce their fear and helped them to live their dreams and enrich themselves and those around them. My business owner clients support not only their own families but the families and saves of countless others, including very significant numbers of employees. The stability we provide for the owners of these delicate business eco-systems touches many lives that we never see.
Asset protection legal practice is a unique animal in some respects. Unlike litigation, which requires an immediate response and where the cost benefit analysis of top notch representation is obvious, what I do requires a deeper level of thought from our clients beyond merely “reacting” to a crisis. My clients value their hard earned position and are willing to spend time money and energy to protect themselves for potential future problems they don’t have yet. Most people aren’t informed about their risks, the options available and the significant limits on what they can do after something bad has happened. The people we work with allow us to educate them so they can make a business decision abut investing in their own success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love locally owned restaurants that have unique character over chains and the usual high-end steak houses, which are great but which are pretty much the same everywhere.
Some local Arizona dining favorites would include Richardsons, El Chorro Lodge, the casual dining Upward Project restaurants on Central like Federal, Joyride and Windsor, Ma Lees for Thai, the hidden gem of Akai Hana for sushi, Jewel of The Crown for Indian food. For my wine lovers, Far Away Wine and Provisions.
For those from other parts of the world who have an interest in seeing ” the old west” a day trip to Carefree and Cave Creek is a fun quick getaway that can range from burgers on the patio at the Horny Toad to fine dining at a resort, but the casual places are almost always more fun, including the local galleries, bars and curio shops. For longer stays, Jerome and Sedona are good as well. Weather permitting, Old Town Scottsdale is also fun for visitors and goes from dive bars and dance clubs to fine dining and art galleries, so there is something there for everyone.
For live entertainment, we’ve got a great small venue live music scene Downtown Phoenix and some classics in the Uptown area like Chars, the Womak and the Rhythm Room.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Many people have contributed to my success, not the least of which is my mother, who raised me working in a family business starting grade school. That experience taught me some of the most important skills I have today including confidence, management skills, a strong work ethic and an understanding of what it actually takes to build and run a business.
I’m also grateful to those who gave me a chance and helped me without motive or expectation, simply because they could, something my mother also taught and asked me to do from an early age.
This would include the late John Greene, who gave me my first legal job out of law school and Doug Lodmell, who taught me the basics of asset protection planing and eventually trusted me to manage his firm. I’m also very grateful to Charlie Davis, who created a phenomenal professional relationship between myself and the law firm he founded, Davis Miles McGuire Gardner, where I have friends and colleagues that have allowed me to do more for those I serve by relying on their expertise in other areas of the law.
Finally, a significant thank you to the countless teachers and professors that contributed to my education, kept me challenged and helped me develop teh skills and knowledge I use every day.
