Meet Eric D. Moore, Brent Boz-Lee, and Richard Maxwell | Details of Eating

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric D. Moore, Brent Boz-Lee, and Richard Maxwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric D. Moore, Brent Boz-Lee, and Richard Maxwell, why did you pursue a creative career?
Certainly we have our day jobs and careers (Richard is lucky that his day job is actually in music), but the pursuit of a life filled with music is less about a specific choice to be made and more about a feeling that must be explored. There seems to be a compulsion to relate to a specific instrument that is virtually impossible to ignore. It is a relationship that never seems to dull and only deepens. That relationship, has further opened up so many experiences and avenues whether it is in terms of writing, meeting other musicians and people, performing or recording that it becomes the driver for one’s life pursuit. Most certainly it is an intoxicating experience when you look back at how you have structured your life around this relationship to an instrument or to the pursuit of a melody.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Details of Eating is a new band that was started recently by myself (Eric), Brent, and Richard this past summer. It grew out of a solo project I had been working on for a couple years. While it began as a synth-pop styled project it has, with the addition of Brent and Richard, evolved into a band with a totally different focus and feel. Because we are new, I think we are still finding our sound, which is right now being honed by our live performances around the valley. Clearly we are expressing something reminiscent of the vocal melodies of the 1980’s post-punk and new wave movements that we all love, but we are embedding those melodies into musical arrangements that are clarified by the more raw style of 90’s alternative music. I think this gives the band a bit of an unusual dynamic as we are focused upon developing intricate song structures that allow the melodies to travel to places that might not be so expected. While we love to let the music evolve into powerful and driving moments, we always want the listener to feel compelled by a sense of beauty…whether that’s in relation to a delicate melody line or to an irresistible rhythm. The live shows that we are doing around the valley right now are really helping us to explore this constant tension between beauty and power.
One of the things that is such a tremendous joy in developing this band is the fact that we all feel that we are part of helping to build the musical community of Phoenix and the valley along with our friends in so many other amazing bands across town. Its a very exciting time to be a musician in Phoenix, because the influx of so many people has opened up the sonic space to a great diversity of ideas and talents. We are just so excited and proud to be a part of this growing scene. In terms of lessons learned? I think the pandemic really made us aware of the great opportunity we have to be artists and that we should never take that for granted. It reminded us that it is so vitally important to pursue your desires now and to never put those ponderings or longings off for some other time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We just played a show at The Lost Leaf last night, and I would absolutely recommend going down there to see live music to anyone. Its been a long-standing musical institution that has brought so many underground bands to the stage and given them an audience. Its truly a special spot. A couple of us live out in the East Valley and are happy to see things growing out this way as well. Gift & Thrift is a local retailer in Mesa who is supporting local artists, vendors, and musicians and is putting on incredible monthly art and entertainment festivals filled with a magical ambiance. Their events are some of my very favorite. A shout out also to 4 Silos Brewery Coffee & Beer House which has been a great refuge for us in Gilbert, as is Jarrod’s Coffee, Tea, and Gallery in Mesa.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’d certainly like to recognize local venues and promoters for taking a chance on our new band. Nameless Presents has been working with us at this early stage and we are really grateful for all of their assistance in booking shows for us. Also the folks at Gift & Thrift in Mesa have been a huge help to us giving us lots of opportunities to play at their events. Additionally we want to thank Noel + Estelle Creative Designs for creating our brand, design, and website they are helping lots of local entrepreneurs and creatives to build their brands and we couldn’t be happier with their work for us.
