We had the good fortune of connecting with Nico Lightbody and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nico, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was to align my work with what I am passionate about, maximizing the athletic potential of others. The business I started is called Tri-Body Training a multi-sport endurance coaching team that specializes in triathlon and trail running. I started the business in 2020 after serving 10 years in the Royal Canadian Navy. In my time with the Navy I coached a swim team and participated in the elite field of Ironman triathlon. The desire to excel at endurance sports and helping others achieve their athletic potential became my passion. This ultimately lead me to releasing from the military and starting my coaching business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my endurance coaching business with one main focus, to help others achieve their athletic potential. We are all capable of so much more than we think. We limit what we think we can accomplish and often count ourselves out before trying. My goal is to help you unlock and show you your athletic potential. I do this by creating a customized training plan tailored to your current fitness, your goal and your lifestyle. One of my core philosophies is working your training into your life and not vice versa. This allows clients to mostly maintain their life structure while introducing changes to their fitness routine. I’ve found this to be key so that clients are able to keep up with their training. Most people struggle with how much to do or where to start when training for a marathon. Every person is unique and has different requirements. That is where I help make custom personalized training plans to help you achieve your goals and athletic potential.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m located on the west coast of Canada in Victoria, British Columbia. It is about a 2 hour ferry ride from Vancouver. Our surroundings are filled with mountains and lush green. The first place I would take you is to Gowland Todd Provincial Park to hike to Squally Reach a round trip 4 mile hike that gives you gorgeous views of the Saanich Inlet. You’ll be treated to a waterfall and some massive trees on the way to the view point.

My favorite spot in the city to eat has to be Wind Cries Mary. They are a tucked away portal to experiencing the rustic riches of Vancouver Island, located in the middle of the downtown core. Their dynamic food menu has a nose-to-tail approach, utilizing all aspects of local bounty and gear towards sharing.

The city of Victoria is plentiful with craft breweries. I would take you on a brewery tour around the city going to spots such as Philips, Vancouver Island Brewing, Whistle Buoy Brewing and Driftwood Browning to name a few. There is no shortage of good beer in Victoria!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). It was in my time with the CAF that I learnt what I truly wanted to do as a career. I was introduced to the sport of triathlon while serving in the CAF. They gave me time to exercise daily and supported me to compete at several triathlons. Beyond the scope of sport the values and work ethic instilled during this time have been valuable assets while running my business. If it were not for this experience I would not be where I am today.
