We had the good fortune of connecting with Colter Olmstead and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colter, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Montana and growing up in a smaller populated area, community has always been a big part of my life. At this point in my career, I’m fortunate enough to be able to have some decision on which jobs I take, and a big factor in my decisions are how does this job impact my community directly. I’m trying to use the tools I’ve built to help build a stronger community, and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do that with my film career thus far.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think the hardest part of being a professional in the creative world, is holding yourself accountable. It’s extremely tough to get into the field, and the beginning can be a difficult time with not having consistent work. The biggest thing I found to help me was taking a tiny chunk out of every day to work on something of your own, especially between jobs you can have days or even weeks of downtime and if you don’t have something personal you’re creating or working on, that empty time can lead to laziness real quick. We all got into this field because we like to create things, so taking even 10-20 minutes a day to work on something personal you’re creating can help keep that motivation and drive going!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a tough one because there’s so many people that I can recognize for getting me to where I am in my career. I’d say a few people that definitely got me started on this track as Tony Purpura really helped me jump into the post sound world and taught me so many things right from the jump about the sound industry and workflow. Then another person would be RC Cone at Tributaries Digital Media group who gave me some of my first opportunities working in post production which helped jump start my career in that field of film. And thirdly, Zane Clampett, a former classmate of mine, who is always down for creative projects and willing to collaborate on some many wild ideas we’ve had over the years. He definitely has a constant source of inspiration and creativity, I owe a lot to him for where I’ve gotten to today.
