We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Higgs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Word spreads fast! After taking taking many pictures for friends in college, I started getting inquires for senior photos, engagement photos, family photos etc. I thought, “why not get paid to do something I enjoy?” In November of 2018, I registered my business, created a website, and started marketing Abby Higgs Photography!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I describe my photography as natural + timeless art for the everyday being. I want people to feel warmth and authenticity radiating through every photo! I’ve put a lot of time into defining my brand and finding my style so I can best serve every client. It’s taken a lot of patience to get to where I am today and I still have a lot of goals left to reach – but that’s the fun in it all.
It’s not easy to be a photographer these days and feeling the weight not being good enough and comparing myself to others can often feel heavy and unbearable. But at the end of the day I always remind myself of my number one job: to serve my clients, provide them with the best experience possible, and to make sure they love their pictures.
I’ve learned along the way to charge my worth, ALWAYS use a contract, not to stress so much about social media, and never stop learning!
I want the world to know that if you choose me to photograph your wedding, engagements, senior photos, maternity, whatever it is, I’m here for you and I will go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and confident in front of my camera.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alright, we’re getting off the plane and heading home to hit the pool, relax, and catch up. Then we’re getting dressed and heading to one of my favorite seafood spots Buck and Rider! The next day we’re taking a girls trip to Sedona and hiking one of my personal favs, Cathedral Rock. I bring my camera (of course) and we take some super cute pics at the top. We head back to Phoenix and grab a caramel latte at Press Coffee. I can’t let them leave without taking them to the Superstition Mountains to take some pics + explore. When we’re done with that we get ready and head to Cham Pang Lanes in downtown Phoenix for some bowing and drinks! The next day we do a girls shopping day at Scottsdale Fashion Square and then we come back, load up my dogs, and take them to Indian School Steele park for a walk and some play time at sunset. We end the night with dinner at The Henry. Finally, we get a resort pass to a rooftop pool called Lustre and hangout for the day. If it’s basketball season, we’re without a doubt ending the trip with a Suns game.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shoutout belongs to my family. My dad and mom are small business owners and have always instilled an entrepreneurial spirit in me from the time I was little. My brother and sister-in-law and my sister and brother-in-law are small business owners as well! My family has always encouraged me to do what I love and embraced me with support and encouragement. My high school photography instructor also deserves a special shout-out for teaching me the basics of DSLR photography and believing in my photography skills.
