We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Valentine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abigail, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For over a decade, I worked as a Costume Designer, shopper, and stylist in the TV/Film Industry, mostly working on scripted television dramas. I thrived in the fast-paced, and creative lifestyle that came with working in Hollywood. However, when I became a mother, my priorities shifted and I found myself wanting a more sustainable work/life balance. After moving my family from Los Angeles to Arizona, I knew I needed to reinvent my career. My time in the fashion and entertainment industry helped master my eye for styling, tailoring, and shopping for all body types and price points. I decided to literally throw out the script, and start styling and consulting for a personal clientele. I launched my personal styling business, Joy and the Valentine, in 2022. I specialize in helping clients edit their closet, find new ways to style what they already own, establish their personal style and learn how to shop more effectively. I am so grateful that I took the time to identify what my skill set was, what brought me joy, how to transition that in to a career that fulfills me.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My name is Abigail Valentine and I am the founder of Joy & the Valentine, a personal wardrobe styling solution. From Closet Edits to 1 on 1 shopping experiences, my goal is to help clients feel confident in their clothing and make getting dressed easier. With 12+ years of experience as a Costume Designer in Los Angeles, I mastered my skills for dressing all styles, genders, ages, body types & price points. I also learned the power of clothing. As Costume Designers, our job is show the audience who a character is before any dialogue is exchanged on screen. Their costume is a representation of who they are and it’s the first thing you see. When I left my career in Hollywood and move my family back to Arizona, I decided to literally “throw out the script” and start helping a private clientele here in Arizona (and virtually) find the “characters” they want to be in the story of their lives. I am de-bunking the age old fallacy that personal wardrobe stylists are just for the rich and famous.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to take out of town guests in Platform 18 at Century Grand. It is such a unique experience and the cocktails are delicious. I also love taking friends to Queen Creek Olive Mill for a picnic and live music on the weekends. When it comes to food, I think Belly in Phoenix or Gilbert and Hush in Scottsdale are a must try. I also love the coffee at Piexoto in Chandler or Gilbert and Beer from AZ Wilderness.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was fortunate enough to be raised by two of the hardest working people I know. My parents worked tirelessly starting their own small businesses and doing whatever needed to be done to support us as a family. Not once did I feel any negative affects of that as a child, which now as an adult, I understand is such a triumph. They were present and filled my life with so much love and support that I was able to sprint towards my dreams without fear. I am so grateful that they supported me and always pushed me to go for what I wanted. They helped teach me how to be a hard worker both as an employee and as a boss.
