Meet Alex Cohen | Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Not very complicated! I wanted to play music for a living and found out very quickly that music careers aren’t just being handed out and have to be created by the artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The only thing that sets me apart is work ethic. I don’t believe people are just born into talent, talent is given in a raw form and has to be refined over many years. I have always given that part of the process its due and just love to do the work. I’ve been asked many times over the years how it is I got to be as proficient at singing and writing lyrics as I am and the only truth to that is I put the work in over many years and continue to do so. It is never easy and requires more patience than I could have ever imagined. The industry almost prides itself on being exclusive and even selfish in its endeavors. No one is going to help you that doesn’t have something to gain from you. At the end of the day that is how the industry or really any business endeavor operates. I just want the world to know that I don’t do this for recognition, I do it because there is nothing else I could survive doing in anyway that resembles happiness. The sacrifices I’ve had to make to remain doing what I love have certainly been immense and the lessons I’ve learned at times have been more discouraging than anything else. Thankfully music has and always will be the reason I’m here, the politics are just a symptom of a bigger picture about our society.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s hard to say because Providence has so much packed into the city but the music venue Alchemy is always a great time and has a wide range of all kinds of different events to enjoy. Also love Yoo Sushi and Chinatown on Thayer in terms of food. The Strand also has incredible events. But there are so many options out here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my parents for always being supportive of my dreams.
