We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Compomizzi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose this artistic life because deep down, I know I am not meant to be a laborer or work at an office. At my true core, I am a being of color, art, and leisure. I enjoy being performative and expressive in all I do, it’s who I am. On top of that, being artistic is the one thing that I am confidently good at. A lot of times in life we are met with challenges and pushback. Seldom do things come easily. I feel blessed that I have found that sense of ease and naturalism with art. When I see my art catch the eyes of people and draws them in for a friendly conversation when I see the impact, my art makes and the connections, I make through that, I know I am doing something that I am meant to.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Art can be described as Eye Candy at its finest. I love to experiment and marry colors in unconventional ways. I am constantly trying to push my boundaries with color as well as subject material. My style tends to dance around beautiful landscapes with sunrays blinding you, dawned with intense saturation, adding whimsical euphoria as well as otherworldly elements to truly capture the imagination of my mind. My goal is to add a sense of wonder, and intense color, and to question the norm in a sometimes bleak, world.
What I am most proud of is my ability to capture people’s attention with my art. Whether it’s the vibrant hues or dramatic contrasts of the paintings or even perhaps a sense of nostalgia, people have come up to me and always say I catch their eye. I am thrilled that with the support of my community and loved ones, I have been able to accomplish a lot as an artist in just a few short months. It continually inspires me and makes me excited to see what else is in store for the future.
I don’t believe anything worth doing comes easy and the fastest way to get anywhere in life is slowly. That being said, my art journey has not been shy of its tribulations as well as ups and downs. I think an ongoing issue with myself as well as a lot of other artists, is financial stress. It can be very difficult starting out as an independent artist, especially when there can be a lot of people that won’t take you seriously or consider your skills a legitimate profession. At times it can feel like you are by yourself, and your inner saboteur rears its ugly head and asks if this is all worth it. What I am continually learning to this day is that art isn’t about the money, it’s about the impact. It is not easy, putting yourself out there, but when you see how bright kids’ faces light up when they see their favorite drawing, or when people stop and stare and fall in love with one of your paintings, you realize that is what is all about. Art is the transfer of emotion. I remember being told that if someone stops in their tracks, interrupting their busy lives to stare at your painting for at least 10 seconds, it’s a win.
If you keep reminding yourself that you are building something with each interaction and you stay consistent, you are leaving an impression on people, and you will eventually see the results you are looking for. Consistency is key, and it is what keeps me calm in the more stressful times. I believe my art truly sparks joy in people and gives them something to stare at as a portal to a brighter colorful world. Knowing that in my soul, I believe it’s my duty on this earth to spread color, love, and joy through my art.
I am thrilled to have started an art business of my very own with my very own website. It was not easy but so worth it. There I am taking Commissions, you can browse a vast collection of my works both traditional and digital, see my upcoming projects, read more about my goals and aspirations, and where you can shop an ever-changing collection of Original Artworks, Canvas, and Photo Prints, Stickers, and MORE!
On top of getting my website launched this year, I also had the privilege of completing my very first mural in my hometown. Having lived in Lake Havasu City for most of my life, it was very cathartic to have a long-lasting piece of my artwork in the heart of the city for years to come. I am truly excited for the doors that will open from that one opportunity, and I look forward to how it will evolve me as an artist in the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my friends were visiting the city, I think the very first thing that I would show them is our beautiful lake. I feel like our lake is definitely a tourist attraction on its own, but we would also get the opportunity to view the actual London Bridge that was brought over from London, Brick by brick in 1968. Upon walking the bridge, I would show my friends the beautiful english village, that is completely covered in beautiful Christmas lights. It really makes you feel like you’re in a Winter Wonderland. We would then enjoy some delicious cheese fondue and enjoy a good meal and drink at Barley Brothers. While also having a great view of the lake, village, and bridge. Since we would be by the bridge, I would also stop by my art teacher’s studio where I do most of my paintings at Pam Reinke studio. After that, we would catch the beautiful Arizona sunset over our famous Lake Havasu mountains that hug the entire city, and then I would take them to our local theater to enjoy a live performance at Grace Arts Live. I have performed there for many years and if I ever get a chance to show people our small but mighty community theater, I always take it. It’s fun to see people enjoy our local talent.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest of Shout Outs goes out to my biggest fan since the beginning, that would have to be my mother. She never shies away from telling me how proud she is of me. She always sees the latest show I am in or buys the newest set of stickers I have available. She goes above and beyond to support me as much as she can, from hanging my art in her pet shop for sale or always helping me out in a pinch and I could not be luckier to have her as my mom. Another Shoutout would have to go to my good friend and Art Teacher Pam Reinke. She has consistently pushed me and my artistic abilities as well as expanded my creativity to pursue an art career of my own. With her help and my mother’s support, I have accomplished many things just this year that a young artist named Alex only dreamed of.
