We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Bloomfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Most people start their own business to pursue financial success, freedom, or perhaps to have a creative outlet. Me? I started my business because my baby would not sleep more than 45 minutes EVER! I was exhausted. A total walking zombie.
It was March 2020 at the VERY beginning of the COVID Pandemic that I gave birth to my daughter Lily. With the world scared for their families and well-being, us having a baby kind of became the least of people’s worries and we felt totally alone.
Like many other pandemic baby families (and new parents in general), we completely winged it. Especially when it came to sleep.
It wasn’t until my baby was 8 weeks old, I was crying on the balcony rocking my screaming newborn when I decided I wanted to make a change. I could NOT continue this way of life any longer. I wasn’t being a good enough mother to my child in this sleep deprived state.
So I got to work. I researched and read every book I could find about baby sleep. When I was feeding my baby in the middle of the night I was online reading articles and ebooks about newborn sleep. During the day I would listen to podcasts, audiobooks, read paperbacks and dive into peer-reviewed studies online all about pediatric sleep.
Then I started to put it all I had learned to practice. We began to implement healthy sleep hygiene practices daily along with gentle sleep shaping techniques at bedtime. Within a week I was seeing incredible improvement. We even got a 7 hour stretch from her one night! I was a new woman! I felt alive again, and I loved life with my baby girl.
But the obsession didn’t end there! I continued to read and learn even though my daughter was sleeping great! I called my friends with babies and helped them too if they asked for it! I realized there was a real need for support for other parents when it came to sleep. What they shared at the hospital was excellent information, but there was no step-by-step guidance. Most parents leave the hospital feeling totally lost and confused. I wanted to be a part of a baby sleep support network that I didn’t have.
This was when I decided to get officially certified as a Pediatric Sleep Consultant so I could do this for real. And the rest is history! I launched Cozy Baby Sleep LLC in early 2021, but I have been honored to serve 100s of families both 1:1, through online guides, blogs, and social media posts. It has been a wild ride, and something I NEVER saw myself doing, but nothing has felt as right to me as this path! I can’t wait to see what the next few years bring as a stay-at-home mother (and pregnant), work-from-home female entrepreneur!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My little business has been a wild ride. I’ve managed to get where I am by working late at night and during my daughter’s naps!!
I’m most proud of how fast I was able to grow in just one year of business. It’s provided me the perfect balance of working, but also being able to stay at home with my daughter full time (and another daughter on the way in April 2022.
It has not been easy in the slightest. Learning boundaries of social media, work/life balance, having to force myself to stop working at midnight has been hard. The difference between your own business and working for someone else is that you don’t go home at 5 PM. You are CONSTANTLY working even when you aren’t. You’re always thinking of ideas to grow your business, learn more about your field, and then fit in raising a family and making time for your relationship too! It’s been a hard struggle!
I actually decided to see a therapist over the summer of 2021! She helped me to create a much better work-life balance. This…. along with bad experiences, and the general ups and downs of starting a business has helped me grow as a business owner, and I feel much more confident going into 2022.
What do I want the world to know about my story? It is REAL!! I have been there, exhausted, lost, hopeless and confused. I am currently in the trenches of toddlerhood and newborn life WITH YOU. I’ve scrolled through social media confused by all the conflicting parenting advice. I’ve overcome horrible weeks of sleep deprivation, feeding issues, and isolation in motherhood. My job is to help you navigate your baby’s sleep in a way that makes you feel comfortable, supported, heard…. and of course…. well rested!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my gosh! I wish all my friends from back home in England could come and visit. Of course I like to go to the Cornish Pasty..(how can I not?!)
One of my favourite restaurants here in the Phoenix area is Barrio Queen!! I love their guacamole!!! And I’m not even a huge avocado fan, but it is my favourite thing on their menu, and the vibe is soo fun and relaxed, especially when you can eat outside. I also loved dining at Bourbon and Bones for my Anniversary last year and would love to take a group of friends there one day.
I would take my friends to lounge by the pool in the warm Arizona sun, enjoy the beautiful desert views at Usery Park, and lets face it… I’ll probably spend time at the play parks with our children. Thankfully Gilbert has SO many to choose from.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Sleep Sorority is a membership started by Becca Campbell where sleep consultants are able to receive business coaching. It has been an amazing online experience. They actually just hosted their first Sleep Retreat/Conference in Scottsdale this weekend!! I owe a lot of my success to not only the coaching inside the Sleep Sorority, but the community of women that came along with it! Owning your own business can feel lonely and isolating, but this has made it feel like I have colleagues. We aren’t in competition with each other, but we all support each other as we help families sleep more!!
