We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Hinkel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alyssa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because I truly have a passion for creativity and I love being able to get up and accomplish something different everyday in my work. Quite literally none of my sessions are the same as I range from graduation portraits to creative editorial projects and everything in between that. Creative careers for me have also been an outlet as it is a great way to take things that you may be feeling or going through and without talking about those things you are able to express them in a different outlet. Being a creative requires you to test your limits and trying to push the box especially in a social media, picture driven world where it can be difficult for those ideas to stand out.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a photographer based out of the Phoenix/Tucson area who specializes in couples, maternity, boudoir, creative and editorial concepts. What sets me apart from others is I enter all my sessions with the mindset of how I can build that persons confidence and get them leaving feeling more confident then when they walked in here. When a client has a session with me I want them to know that I treat there session as if it were my own and I go above and beyond to get the shots they expects and didn’t know they would be wanting. Not only do you gain a photographer who with hustle for your to get those perfect shots but you also gain a friendship as it never fails I am able to turn clients into friends! Building this level of trust with clients is important for a photographer because it gives the clients the opportunity to have a personal connection with you for future endeavors!

I am most proud of my 2022 Pride session I did that ended up on the front cover of Colorshot Magazine Pride Edition 2022. It was definitely a confident boost that I needed and the validation I needed to prove to myself that my work is good enough to keep going. I had just dove back into photography after a long break and It was the push I needed that let me know “you belong here; keep going”. This definitely played a huge part in where I am today, which is finally figuring out where I stand myself in this world of photography. It has not been an easy road by any means, there are so many different edits, presets, concepts/session types. to choose from and to narrow down to. It can become overwhelming to have to choose your “niche” and I think that has been what I have been looking for and recently have found. I love the dark and moody, documentary, natural vibes and have really been leaning into this lately. It seems fitting and it just feels right. How to overcome these challenge is definitely a task at hand. It takes ALOT of trial and era and just doing stuff and seeing how you like it. There are so many sessions I have re-edited before and after delivering them just so I can play with different edits, and different colors and different lighting with different edits to see what works and what works best. It is seriously just trial and error and taking the time to play around with these settings on your photos. There are going to be session you are not “IN LOVE” with and that is okay, it just means yo have something you can improve on and learn more about.

I want the world to know that my brand is all about human empowerment, self love, and celebrating the uniqueness found in people and in the concepts we create. I work so hard to ensure anyone who steps into a session with me feels safe first and fore most over anything, following that I ensure you leave feeling more confident and in better spirits then when you walked in the door. I pride myself in being a photographer people can love and trust to keep their comfort in mind and also bring all the fun vibes during a session.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man there really is soo much to do in Arizona it would be so hard to narrow it down. Ideally I for food we would go to Breakfast Kitchen Bar and enjoy there specialized breakfast bowls, morning cocktails, and my personal favorite their avocado fries. Another favorite breakfast choice would be Jojo’s Coffeehouse in Scottsdale where they have coffee and mimosa flights as long as breakfast options to choose from. Both are very aesthetically pleasing restaurants as well. For dinner I would recommend 5 & Diner; it is the cutest 50’s diner in the middle of Phoenix, they do go all out with costumes, food and the traditional smoothies, any greaser is sure to love it! For drinks its time to go to Old Town Scottsdale and party at Bottled Blondes or HIFI, the lines can be long and this is more for the part crowd, if youre looking for a chill kind of night or maybe country is more your thing I would recommend going to the west valley to a hole in the wall bar called Romans. They play more than just country but you are where the cowboys live in so it is a small country bar with a good crowd on the weekends! As far as activities or things to see I would definitely take them to tube the salt river to take in that Arizona sun as well as that scenery around them. its a quick 40 minutes from downtown to get to the salt river and totally worth it for the day! Another favorite is taking a drive through the Superstition Mountains, before covid you could follow a road to a little city called Tortilla Flats, if you kept following the road you can drive the back way to Roosevelt lake and then through Payson and loop back down to phoenix, however the road to tortilla flats to Roosevelt lake is currently closed so you would need to take alt route to the bridge.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Id love to shout out my fiancé for standing by me in tough times and always being encouraging to keeping going even if it I couldn’t find the strength myself those moments. Id also like to thank my mom for being my biggest fan. As well as some of my favorite creatives who any recognition I do get would not be possible without there help. Carolyn, Keelyn, Serena, Haley. You guys are all so amazing for putting up with my crazy ideas I throw your way and then accomplishing them!
