We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Piering and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am a born and raised 3rd generation native of Arizona. My father was the general manager of Sun State Builders for 40 years. As a kid, I grew up in the business. My father and I would do the electrical underground for Sun State’s projects on the weekend from the time I was 14 years old. This is where I started to learned to read construction drawings and developed interest into building things. From there, I worked at Sun State from the time I was 17 years old. I started out as a courier and worked my way to owner from there. I have held every position in the company with the exception of the accounting roles. I believe this helps me to better understand our employees and the day-to-day challenges they face.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are design-build commercial contractors primarily. We do work that is not design-build but feel we really can add a lot of value to a project when we can collaborate with the owner on the design. Regardless of contract structure, what sets us apart from others is our Customer Service and Quality. Our employees are so committed to our customers satisfaction that they go above and beyond daily for them. I am consistently humbled by how hard they work and the lengths they go to in meeting our customer’s needs. I believe this is why we have so many repeat customers. When you build with us, the relationship is forever. We are happy to help our customers with the simplest of things even 10 years after their building is completed. It’s just how we are.
Regarding our quality, we take pride in the level of finish and precision in which our buildings are completed. Every employee is trained and constantly reminded to view the project as if they were “building it for their mom”. By this we mean, if it wouldn’t be acceptable for your mom’s house, it isn’t ok to leave it that way in our buildings. A testament to our level of quality is that when you walk one of our projects 10-20 years later, they are still in great shape. We have customers that when purchasing existing buildings specifically ask the brokers if Sun State built it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Tan Mountains for hiking- The trails are beautiful and our fall- spring weather is incredible.
Steak 44– The food is amazing, and the atmosphere is romantic.
Top Golf- Its better than real golf because its quicker and there is food!
If it’s the right time of year…. The Waste Management Open. It’s a great time and most people can’t imagine how big of an event it is. And the golf’s not bad either.
Santan Flat- It’s a unique indoor/outdoor venue that is all about America and the principals in which it was founded. I love it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my father. He was a piler of this company, our values and really a critical part of the foundation of who we are today. He gave me the example of how to be fair yet firm in business relationships and how to look at issues from all sides. Secondly, Jim Chamberlain our founder. He had faith in me and gave me so many opportunities to excel in this business. He saw things in me that I did not see in myself.
