Meet Angel Pickett | Owner of Party Like A Toddler

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Pickett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was a first-time mom, trying to plan my sons first birthday. I searched all over the internet looking for some fun activities for my son to enjoy at his big birthday party. I was unable to find activities or rental options that were specific for the birthday baby. The day came for his birthday party, which was at a large banquet hall and ultimately there was nothing specifically for him to enjoy. We had lots of decorations and fun games for the older children to enjoy however the birthday baby had nothing. From that experience, I felt there was a need to provide specific entertainment options to help celebrate the earliest birthdays. These milestones are so important to the parents and families to celebrate which is why I knew my business would be successful.
As a new mom, I knew exactly what fun items would be enjoyable for toddlers to enjoy. I spent time considering what options would work for my business and creating a business plan to be successful. I searched for possible competition and determined that Phoenix, Arizona would be the perfect place to start a soft play rental business that caters specifically to children 5 and younger.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For the last 13 years I have worked in the Retirement Services industry. I am originally from Massachusetts, but my employer relocated me to Arizona 9 years ago. In my profession, I deal with money planning and savings. Those skills have helped me immensely in starting my own business and making the hard decisions needed on the day to day. In addition to managing money, I also manage a large team of employees and team engagement and high work morale are paramount. Ensuring that my team enjoys their work environment has always been a focus of mine and often I was tasked with event and incentive planning. I always enjoy planning fun work events and finding new ways to motivate and recognize the members of our organization. Those experiences have helped me to create my own party rental service!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We often have visitors from our Massachusetts and they love visiting Arizona because we always visit the Grand Canyon and stop in Sedona on the way. I always take them to Bosa donuts or First Watch for breakfast. For lunch, I think Joyride Tacos house is excellent and for dinner, I love Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour downtown Phoenix which is a perfect place to visit after catching a comedy show at Standup Comedy club.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am continually inspired by the strong women business owners who are often mothers of small children but we somehow find the time to run successful businesses. I am thankful for the support and partnership of my husband who helps to run our business.
