We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Suazo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Since I was young, my family has always had my back. Whether that was sports, academics, or other activities, the support of those who raised me was always there. My parents instilled the motto in me, “Do what you want, just be the best at it”. That created a mindset in me that I was able to do whatever and become whomever, but just make sure I was determined to be successful at it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up in the early 2010s’ kitchen environment that was just becoming more of a controlled chaos. There were still chefs that talked down or yelled at you, and the industry was just as you would see in movies or television. With that being said, I was able to work with chefs that wanted to change the dynamic and challenge the old school precedent of how kitchens were supposed to be. I knew being gay, I was up to face adversity, but the matters of my sexual orientation never mattered. What mattered was if I was able to do my job quickly and efficiently. A major lesson I learned was to always keep my head down and push my capabilities and technique as far as I can. I think one important thing to know about me is that I will always push myself and others around me to be the best version of ourselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up a Phoenix native, but currently live in Flagstaff. I really like visiting Dark Sky Beer Garden or Foret Flag for delicious food and drinks. I also enjoy day trips down Snowbowl mountain and finding local trails to explore. I think what Flagstaff offers best is a sense of community with nature. Being able to enjoy the pines and fresh air while enjoying a cold beer at Pay n Take is also worth the time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to the women in my life that have formed me to become a better individual that cares about others and my craft. My mother, Stella, my nana, and my tias. Also, the chefs that have allowed me to grow and mature under their tutelage, Chefs Rochelle Daniel, Maribel Silva, and Samantha Sanz. They are all deserving off the credit.
