Meet April Vetrano | Registered Dietitian

We had the good fortune of connecting with April Vetrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to have a positive impact by helping people fall back in love with food and themselves and I knew I could do that by opening my own private practice, Edge Health Solutions (EHS). We live in a world where the diet industry has penetrated every nook and cranny with false nutrition information. And I’ve seen firsthand how yo-yo dieting can really break people down both mentally and physically. So, being that I am Registered Dietitian and therefore a nutrition expert, I knew that I had the knowledge to start breaking down those falsehoods and debunking the nutrition myths that are out there (in case you were wondering, white potatoes are just as nutritious as sweet potatoes!). EHS is not a space where you will find any crazy diets or restrictions. It is a place where you will find constant support, factual nutrition education and the accountability to establish health longevity. I wanted to create a friendly space where anyone would feel comfortable going to ask their burning nutrition questions and know that they would be receiving factual answers from a qualified source without any judgement.

What should our readers know about your business?
The primary takeaway I want to highlight about my private practice, and something that I pride myself in, is that I do not promote any type of fad diet or diet in general. My practice’s foundation is in cutting-edge scientific research (hence the name Edge Health Solutions!) and research shows that fad diets and diets in general do not work and can actually have the opposite effect on our bodies than intended. For example, most people looking to lose weight who go on a fad diet/diet end up gaining the weight back and more. I pride myself on providing a judgement free zone for my clients. I am not the food police, I am not here to judge habits or cravings, likes or dislikes. I show up for my clients as someone who is an expert in the field of nutrition, who is there to coach them about how to reach their health goals while still being able to eat the foods that they love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the most incredible things about Tucson is its nature and the beautiful sceneries that we get the privilege of seeing every day! Because of this, I would make sure to schedule plenty of outdoor activities. These would include: going on a nature walk on the Linda Vista Trail Loop, hiking Romero Pools, horseback riding at Houston’s Horseback Riding, taking a drive up to Mount Lemon, ziplining with Arizona Zipline Adventures and of course spending time poolside on one of the days as well. Now, being that I am a dietitian, I am a HUGE foodie and love to try different spots around town so I would definitely take my best friend to a different restaurant every day. For breakfast I would bring my guest to Prep and Pastry, Oink Café and Teaspoon. For lunch I would visit Blanco, Seis Kitchen and Bubbs Grub for yummy BBQ. For dinner I would hit up Fiamme Pizza, Locale Neighborhood Italian and Guadalajara Original Grill for a fun atmosphere and exciting drinks. There are definitely a lot of restaurants I left out because, honestly, I could go on forever!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m giving my shoutout to both my husband and my father. My father has always owned his own business, so starting from a young age I had the privilege of watching him and his amazing work ethic. His constant fearlessness when it comes to taking business risks has always inspired me and pushes me to be fearless in pursuit of my passions as well. My husband deserves a shoutout too – his constant support and encouragement are the reasons why I had the confidence to start my private practice in the first place. Without him being there to show me the tough love I needed; I wouldn’t be where I am today.
