We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Battle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Betty, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This is a good question! I have two businesses, a birth doula business and a Reiki business that my husband and I both run. Both of them started as passion projects and naturally unfolded into businesses.

Working in corporate America, being away from our kids and trading our time freedom for a paycheck wasn’t working for us. We both knew we wanted to work for ourselves and do something we love. One of our mantras is “we are making an impact while making an income.”

How can we be of service and help others, while supporting our family? That was the question that started it all.

As a birth doula, I empower and support other women through their pregnancy and birth journey.

As Reiki Masters, we not only teach Reiki, we help others feel good, peaceful, and lighter through helping them release stagnant energy in their body.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have two businesses, a birth doula business (Empowher Birth Services) and a Reiki business (Universoul Healing) that I run with my husband.

As a birth doula, I support and empower women through their pregnancy and birth. I’m like a personal birth bestie who will be there to listen, give advise, encourage, advocate and hold you up. I became a birth doula after personally experiencing two very different births. With my first, I followed everything by the book (under OB care at a hospital) and after having him, I felt like I gave so much of my power away. With my second, I did things completely different and what would be considered against the grain. I did a lot of research and read books to help advocate for myself. I got a midwife, and had the most beautiful empowering, unmedicated birth. I learned that a lot of the procedures that are routinely done are not necessary. The U.S leads with highest maternal mortality rates, especially with women of color. I knew that women needed more support in the birth room. Being a birth doula, allows me to educate, empower, advocate and support mothers.

Now for our reiki business, if you’re not familiar with reiki, it is an energetic healing modality that helps move stuck energy in the body, bringing a balance to your mind, body and soul. Javante was the first to learn and practice reiki. As I watched him glow and flourish from the inside, out, I wanted to learn and apply it too. Reiki has become our life. We practice daily and because of this, our life has been so rich and abundant. Our mindset has changed, the way we parent and love has changed. It has helped us so much and we wanted to pass the torch by teaching others. We teach classes, hold space in one on one sessions and also host events that include reiki and meditation.

Has it been easy? Yes and no. We feel like we are in total alignment with what we do. Because of this, both businesses have flourished organically through referrals and simply connecting with people. Turning these passions into businesses has had a lot of growth opportunities. We had to learn through trial and error. Like marketing and all the back end stuff.

What sets me/us apart? It’s the love, passion and intention we pour into the people we work with.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Itinerary is my middle name lol

The planner in me really loves this questions. We live in Mesa but are always in Tempe, Phoenix or Scottsdale for fun spots!

Sunday – I love a nice, easy Sunday morning. It would start with a brunch picnic at Singh Meadows. We would take a blanket, set up under a tree and enjoy the view of the water. There’s a farmers market there on the weekends so we would get some fresh fruit, homemade bread, jams & butters. Transition into roller blading or bike riding at Tempe Town Lake with lunch at The Golden Pineapple.

Monday: We would kick off the week, with a little staycation action at Lylo Swimclub. Reserve a daybed, order a dole whip, eat some amazing food and soak up the sun by the pool the rest of the day.

Tuesday: Next day, we will stick to downtown Mesa. Start our day with some coffee at Jarrods Coffee, shop at the vintage shops and boutiques. Pick up food at Worth and possibly shop for local farm fresh foods at Main Street Harvest.

Wednesday: We’ll take it easy. Get breakfast burritos at Adrian’s Mexican Food, walk around Tempe Marketplace and catch a movie.

Thursday: Lets put on some dancing shoes and go to The Duce in Phoenix for Latin night. We’ll dance the night away and enjoy some brisket and mac n cheese balls after.

Friday: Friday night we’ll hit downtown Phoenix! Visit the Churchill for music, drinks and Freak Brothers Pizza.

Saturday: She can’t leave without going to Pemberton! We’ll enjoy all the vibes with music, drinks and variety of food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This made me think of the quote, “we rise by lifting others.” There have been so many people through out my journey that have inspired and helped me. I have to start with my parents, my dad was an immigrant from Mexico who came here for a better life. He is a self taught, construction worker, mechanic, architect and has worked his whole life, to give us the best. He did this knowing very little English and only having an education up to 3rd grade. I get my fire and passion from him. My mom, is the heart and pillar. Her support and love has helped me walk through life with an open selfless heart and mind.

Shout out to my husband Javante, who continuously inspires and pushes me to be better. His “out of the box” way of thinking, challenges me to change my perspective and look at the bigger picture.

Another person, is my soul sister Melanie Peralta. who I look up to as a mentor. She planted the seeds of growth and transformation through her Woman to Womben events. Attending her events, pushed me to dive into personal development.

I also have to give a big thank you to the community, friends and clients who support us!
