We had the good fortune of connecting with BG Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BG, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been interested in photography and around 2009 I decided to take an intro class at Pima to learn how to use my Sony Alpha 200 in manual mode. Among all the things I learned In that class were the exposure triangle, depth of field, focal distances, and how to edit digital negative files. After that, I just started going out capturing nature and wildlife photos and I have been since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My day job is a computer programmer. More specifically I am an Automation Engineer, I write code to test code. I’ve been with the same company for over 15 years. I like it alot and I certainly can and am “creative” with the code I write but I also enjoy and need to be creative outside of that with my photography. A couple of years ago I decided it was time to move into drone photography and a Mavic 2 Pro. My experience with photography and playing video games made it a fairly easy move. In photography, perspective is important and you will often see photographers kneeling close to the ground or standing on objects to look down to get a unique perspective. After having the drone for a bit, I thought it would be awesome to get a unique perspective of the murals around Tucson that you couldn’t get with a camera by standing on a box or a ladder. So I started to work on my Murals Database which was a fusion of my software development background and my photography background.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As far as sight seeing trips or hiking, that depends if it is 110 or not, lol. If not, Saguaro national park and Sabino Canyon/7 Falls. Cienega Nature Preserve is nice too. If they like animals, definitely the Desert Museum and Reid Park Zoo. Then we’d hit up a bunch of the awesome local breweries / beer houses like Pueblo Vida, Dragoon, Barrio, Arizona Beer House, and Tucson Hop Shop. As far as food, El Charro El Guero Canelo. I’d make sure to drive by a bunch of the murals on our way to all of our destinations.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife Rita has been supportive the whole way. If you know about photography, you know it isn’t exactly cheap and there is always something new and more expensive to add. She always comes out with me in the middle of the night to photograph meteor showers and went with me on storm chases up until that one close call. Recently I have even been able to rope her into coming with me and taking her own photos!
