Meet Blue Honey | Music group/band

We had the good fortune of connecting with Blue Honey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Blue, what are you inspired by?
As a group, we are collectively inspired by many things from art to science to our own life experiences. Like any good artist(s), we try to incorporate creative inspiration that comes from as many sources as possible, whether it be the music of others, movies, or even video games. Apart from media, our own observations about our lives and the world around us provide much inspiration for both musical composition and lyrical content.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like any band, what makes us special is our unique blend of genres. Mixing together our own influences in a way that felt fun, we ended up with something between hip-hop, jazz and funk. We also think our unique attitude sets us apart: we work hard to sound good, but we keep it light and playful (almost fratty) throughout rehearsal and performance. As a general rule, there is always some kind of banter or ad-libbing going on, even in our recordings! If this were a live interview, we’d all be ripping on each other like crazy right now. The laughs often start immediately and we believe that’s what makes us approachable/accessible. As far as making it where we are today, sure it’s been hard at times, but we love a good challenge and we’ve only just begun!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off, there’d be no strict itinerary if you hang with us; it’s all about going with the flow. We’d for sure hit up the best food. Obviously the Mexican food here is like nowhere else, and there’s no shortage of places to go. It’s also important we go to the best spots just outside of town like windy point, mount Lemmon, Saguaro Nat’l Park (both of them), and Sabino Canyon! And in the evenings, there’s nothing better than the many live music performances downtown at places like Club Congress, The Century Room, Rialto Theatre, Thunder Canyon Brewery, and many others serving up lots of different genres side-by-side.
ALTERNATE RESPONSE: Let’s just hit Micky D’s and go hang out in the wash.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is tough, as we have many people to thank for helping us reach where we are today. First, it may be appropriate to thank our families, all of them, for hosting many practice sessions in the early days, coming to nearly every show, throwing tips in the jar, and constantly encouraging us along our way. There is also a wonderful group of musicians/producers here in Tucson called O.C.F. (Our City’s Finest). We first played with OCF at a Marley B show at Solar Culture. That was our first real show playing our original jazz-hop stuff with live instruments and vocals, and we could tell right away these guys were loving what we were throwing out there. We exchanged numbers after the show and played many shows together since, crossing over into one another’s recording projects along the way. It’s amazing to us how O.C.F. and Blue Honey almost feel like “sister projects” by this point. Thanks Jay, Rae, GP, Cecilia, and Soze!
