We had the good fortune of connecting with Bonnie Hunt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bonnie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process I had when deciding to starting my own business was definitely with an emphasis on being there for my family and making my own flexible hours to be able to do that. I definitely work more than I would at a 9-5 but I can work while my little one is at school, or at night while he’s sleeping as well. I’m able to take him to school, pick him up, help out at his school when needed and also be there with him when he’s not feeling well. I also am able to fuel my creative spark with cookies and that’s hard to find working for someone else.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a cookie artist is definitely a creative job and can be so fun. My favorite part of what I do is all the customizations that can be made into edible art. All the holiday designs, custom designs for all kinds of special occasions and also pop culture references and styles that change over time definitely make things fun for me. I’ve also learned though, that when you don’t have the creative freedom you feel you need or you’re under constant time constraints, the creative process is halted and it can make things difficult. From personal experience, I know through time management and years of planning that if I try and take on too much I will not be able to work to my best abilities. The creative flow for me works best when I feel like I have the tools, time and quieted mind needed to make things that are satisfactory to me. The great thing about art is that it’s subjective and is all about personal perspective which allows for many other creatives to do their own thing and everyone can be successful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend come to visit AZ that had never been here I would definitely try to capture the magic of AZ by visiting some favorite local places to eat like Snooze in Downtown Gilbert or Biscuit House for breakfast, Then checkout an old ghost town like Jerome, Goldfield or to go see the wild horses that graze in the Salt River. The weather is amazing in the winter so a bike ride is always good or if it’s summer, a pool day with a refreshing cocktail is a must. A burrito and elote in a cup from Topo or a fry bread taco from The Stand sound like a great choice for lunch. AZ has so many amazing farmers markets to find local vendors for all kinds of goods which would be a good spot to get a feel for AZ living. Joes BBQ, Bario Cafe or Postinos are all yummy and I have been dying to eat at Pizzeria Bianco! AZ also has the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley as well as Sedona and some amazing day trips close to home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely want to shoutout my family. My husband for all the help he gives me after working his own work weeks, and for everyone else in my home who makes adjustments so I can literally run a cookie shop out of our home. I also want to shoutout my customers. Some of them have been with me literally since day one of this cookie adventure. There are a few who buy cookies from every single sale I have and I can’t even put into words how I much appreciate them or what their support means. They give me shout outs every chance they get, refer me to friends and pump me up giving me motivation to keep going.
