We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Briseno and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, how does your business help the community?
My favorite thing about board games is the way they gather people around a table. There’s something special about being around a table with others, its such an intimate space. Board games provide an avenue to gather people in a way that lets you share meaningful moments as well as create fun memories.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My blog and photos are branded as Board Games and Brews, where I take craft beer and try to thematically pair it with modern hobby board games. This started simply as a way for me to document what my friends and I were playing and drinking as we got deeper into each of those realms. Since then it has grown into a larger community of both craft beer lovers and board gamer enthusiasts, in a way that is supportive and encouraging. The most challenging part of creating content for me is sticking to the content that I am proud of. Algorithms don’t always agree with my vision, so staying true to what I am most proud of can be difficult at times; it can be difficult to not get wrapped up in engagement statistics and likes. My page has always been a creative outlet for me, so I hope that it inspires people to do the same. To create something that they are proud of, because if it is authentic to them, it will find its way to the people that appreciate it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite agenda for visiting a new place is always around the table. What are we eating or drinking? Visiting Las Cruces, I would need to take them to my favorite breweries. Bosque Brewing has been a long time favorite for me, as it was the brewery that got me hooked on craft beer. Ice Box Brewing, has both delicious drinks and food at all of their locations, I really like their Mexican cantina. My favorite food is hamburgers, so we would need to visit my favorite spots. I think Days Hamburgers downtown has the best simple and classic burger, while High Desert Brewing has a fantastic green chile burger that pairs well with their peach wheat beer. Beyond food and drink, I think its important to visit some of our nature spots. White Sands National monument is unlike most experiences, its unreal in so many ways. Dripping Springs is a simple but great hike to experience both mountain and desert. Lastly, the desert west of town is a personal favorite. Its so vast and empty, yet so filling is you take the time to simply be.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I need to give a big thank you to my family, friends, and students, who indulge me, willing to play board games in our free time, which allows me to create content that is meaningful to me, to share with others. There are many wonderful solo board games as well as many delicious brews that I would gladly enjoy on my own. my favorite thing about Board Games and Brews is the way that it invites others around the table, so I would like to dedicate my shoutout to those that have shared a table with me.
