Meet Carmen Mejia | Calligrapher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen Mejia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially I did not think I could make a living or make any profit out of the calligraphy, but my family and friends believed in me and pushed me to start doing more of this art. When I started, I just did it for fun and as a way of therapy, to relax and take my mind off the day to day stress. People started asking if I sold the things I did or if I could make something specific to which I went for it. People started to reach out for more things and I started from acrylic paintings with calligraphy to envelope calligraphy, wall paintings, wedding signs and wood work. I bought an iPad to pursue in the digital business, creating logos and making the design process a bit easier and little by little have been investing to make the business grow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It wasn’t easy and it still isn’t, but the passion I have to create things has made me not give up and pursue this dream. I started with acrylic painting with quotes and started expanding to wood work, signs, calligraphy for weddings, and digital art. I received a lot of support from other artists in my community and this is how I overcame most of the difficulties encountered during my time as a calligrapher. 

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them hiking, and to the most beautiful beaches in the area and do some grilling at home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to God who gave me the talent and also, my family and friends who always believed and me and encouraged me to take risks and do what I love. To all the people who has supported me along the way, clients, friends, family and partnerships created throughout this wonderful journey. To all these people, thank you for believing in me.
