We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecile Follansbee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cecile, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risk or ‘pushing the envelope’ is the expression of my creativity. Going outside the box, trying something different is a source of learning. I like to take these steps as they are fulfilling for me. Even if they don’t work out, I’ve learned something
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career was in industry where I learned to discipline my logical thinking, problem solving, communicating with others, focusing my thoughts and ideas. After retiring, I promised myself I’d do two things; get involved in the arts of the community where I settled and start exploring my own creativity. Getting involved artistically and creatively was a main criteria for why I settled in Tucson.
Being different, as a woman in industry meant to me that I had to be ready to be different, to stand out. Confidence grew over the years which has reinforced my willingness to try new approaches to my art. I love everything minimal, simple, full of color and depth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1. Sonoran Desert Museum – to familiarize themselves with this part of the country. 2. A TSO Concert – we have a tremendously talented orchestra! 3. Hiking in the various mountains. 4. Downtown – Maynard’s, Hotel Congress, Penca’s. 5. go to our great breweries; Pueblo Vida, Borderlands, Tap & Bottle. 6. Cycle along our bike paths 7. go to the Jazz Festival concerts. 8. Tucson Museum of Art with lunch at Cafe a la C’Art. 7. Day trip to Bisbee and Patagonia. 8. Relax in our warm and dry air
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out to Alysa Phiel. Alysa is the owner of Wild Desert Glass here in Tucson. She has been my teacher, mentor and inspiration during my journey of working with glass.
