Meet Chelsie Tamala | Product Designer & Oil Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsie Tamala and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To start a business or create anything it’s all about taking risks. I continually take risks as a fine artist and as a product designer/ entrepreneur. You never know the exact out come of what you are doing is going to end up being like but that is part of the beauty and excitement of creating. It starts with a vision and lots of research. You have to be up for consistent problem solving with reachable daily/weekly goals.
It is scary to put yourself out there but it is the only way you will know if something truly works or not. Before I started Level Body I wasn’t trying to create a product for others. I was formulating a product that would eventually solve the inflammatory issues I was having and treat my body + mind. It’s always hard to really know if something is working or not until you stop using it. I put my first hand-written label prototype on an amber boston round glass bottle and Level Face + Body Oil was born. I asked family and close friends to try it out and received honest reviews from people who were at first skeptical to try oil on their face, but they did and had awesome results and continually by more bottles, so you know you did something right.
Entrepreneurship is my new type of thrill seeking. I love constantly learning and seeing what I can build from so little.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Level Body is a minimal plant-based skincare company. LB currently consists of a single product which is an oil-based moisturizer/cleanser. I created LB during the pandemic while I was home with my three children. Which I know many women/ families have had the same experience. It was a tough time but I truly believe that beautiful things can come out of great hardships. I feel that I am my product as I have poured my heart and soul into it. I myself use it twice a day and like many products I become excited with have shared it with my own family and friends. I am still in the beginning stages with my outreach but I myself know that there is much power in word-of-mouth and that was helped me build what I currently have. Working for yourself is tough at times but LB it is a great passion of mine so it doesn’t feel like work but merely creating a solution to a problem.
As my company grows my goal is to create minimal plant-based skincare products with the less is more outlook.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a big foodie so I would be taking my friend to my favorite restaurants. My great grandfather was a chef from the Philippines his love for food has trickled down into my family and my grandmother has kept it alive. We love to cook, gather, eat … and talk all things food, of course. I am a creature of habit so when I eat out I usually go to Harumi Sushi or Kodo their sister restaurant. I cook a lot for myself and I am a bit of a homebody so I usually go out for something I can’t easily make at home and their sushi is one of a kind. I also love Casa Corazon’s beet enchiladas they are so absolutely delicious. I am a sucker for a great street taco or potato flautas my favorites are from Huichos Tacos and Tacos + Cake’s in Laveen which is my kids current favorite.
My most visited and nostalgic restaurant I love in Phoenix is Cherry Blossom Noodle Cafe. A unique place where you can find Italian and Japanese food. My favorite noodle dishes are their Pad Thai and Ika Menti but they are known for their ramen.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank my grandmother, Bobbi Stoutenburgh and my mother, Kristin Brewer. Both of these woman have amazing unstoppable – entupeural spirits that have had a major impact on our community. My grandmother has been a piano teacher for over 40+ years in valley. Not only does she teach but she is there for her students and listens to them and in many cases has helped them get through many hardships as well as develop their skills as incredible pianists. She has also been my rock in many instances of my life and is a born leader. My mother has been a massage therapist in the valley for over 20+ years. In my eyes, she is a healer and one of the best. Her years worth of returning clients have said the same. She works for a major resort spa here in Phoenix as well as running her own practice out of her home. I am lucky to have had such strong independent woman leaders in my life who turned their visions into realities.
