We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Osuch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We’re still not anything big, or making waves, but we hope to be there in the not so distant future. However, I attribute our current success with two factors in my mind.
1. Is the hard work. All the guys play an important role in the band and handle different aspects of the machine. Ali (bass) and Chris (vocals) handle visuals, content, marketing plans, release schedules and booking. Stiv (guitar) handles all of our production from backing tracks and building our live set, to writing and tracking new ideas or songs. Doug (drums) is one of the best I’ve met. This man could play anything, and he assists in writing, and making tracks with Stiv. All of us bust *ss for this. All of us realize, you need to put in the work. It’s cliche, but you really can’t stop grinding, if you want to get to the goals you want.
2. Is the fans. As I said, we still have a long way to go, but the support we have from our fans, has been beyond inspiring to push us to grow, do more and to realize that what we’re doing is worth all the blood, sweat and tears that come from being a smaller band starting out.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’ve all been playing music from a young age. Most musicians I feel, have the same story of the so called “lightbulb moment.” You either had a parent/older sibling/friend show you an artist or band, that made you go “I need to do that.” For me, my parents were a bit older, so it started with my dad playing Ozzy and Black Sabbath, then went to my older sister showing me bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and Deftones. Over time you start to go further down that rabbit hole on your own.
There is of course challenges. I mean, I’m 33 and have played in bands since I was 15. However, of all my projects over the years, I have never had a group of guys that are as hard working and driven as I am. To have that now, with Seagrave, just felt like a weight lifted. Like FINALLY, this can really, truly, go somewhere. To go through about 15 years of that disappointment before ending up here, can get insanely discouraging.
The best advice I can give to anyone else wanting to start a band, or maybe take your band to the next level, is while it is about the music of course. What makes it all work, is you need the right people. Members need to all be on the same level, same mindset, same goals. Without that you’re just counting a clock to getting to a place where that doesn’t work. Personally, I would take a member that is a little less talented with playing, but all in. Than someone who is insanely talented, but looks at is as more of a weekend warrior/hobby.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is a surprising amount of good food here in Durham Region. Some of my favourites are Spicy Affairs, Three Six Kitchen, Smash, Lamannas, Talk of The Town. As far as nightlife here, the scene for not just metal, but lots other genres is really great. Durham Region and of course neighbouring Toronto is teeming with talent, no matter what you’re into. You can easily find a show to attend just about every night and weekend, all within an hours drive.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All of the other bands we’ve played with, promoters, venues, fans, engineers, producers. There are too many to name, without making this shoutout list about 200 names long. We appreciate and love you all for the support,
