We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Devonn Gary and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danielle Devonn, why did you pursue a creative career?
My parents nurtured my artistic side from when I was very young. I’m pretty sure my father still has paintings of mine from art class in high school. I was always drawing on someone or on myself, drove my parents crazy. Even in my athlete days, I was doing teammates hair and applying their mascara before games. Once I got my makeup professionally done for prom, I was pretty hooked.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a creative in any industry and getting to the point where you can do it successfully is never easy, shout out to all of you because you deserve it too! I’ve always had a “I don’t give up” mentality, I’m pretty sure it comes from being so into sports most of my life. The downside is being so hard on myself as an artist and a business woman, yet I’ve just always wanted to evolve and be the best artist I can.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to trust myself, trust my eye and don’t over think things. I use to sketch all of my body paints out before I executed them until an artist I look up to told me to stop. She told me I was good enough, in more than many ways and to stop overthinking and just go. Ever since then, if I’m asked to do something I just go and create.

My most favorite achievements for me are the sports events I get to work. Having a athletic background and being able to do what I love are the two things that I never thought would happen.

One day I will tell people how I was homeless and worked for the Dodgers. How I was homeless and still worked for BET and MTV. I want people to know it’s possible if you don’t give up, but most importantly be your craft. Always want to get better, never get complacent.

I can’t even begin to tell you about the level of support, I get from Arizona. Tucson is the second place I started my art journey but it’s home. Just my friends and followers in general, my entire kit was stolen three years ago. I could’ve gave up, but when I put the call out about what happened on my social media I’ll just say I was overwhelmed with the response more than I was from the incident. I wouldn’t be here without the support I have, there’s just no way. I am forever thankful for the people that care, the clients that return, and the clients that referred me to others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any time anyone visits me for the first time, we go to Sedona. The beauty of everything from the mountains to the trees is just an amazing and recharging energy that everyone should try at least once.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My educators and even classmates from beauty school! When I didn’t have a way there, teachers and even the director would pick me up. When I was entering into competitions for makeup art, my classmates cheered me on. To this day my educators are some of my biggest supporters, I love you women and you know who you are.
