We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Forman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dave, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I started my bartending service in 1992, the work-life balance was a concept that wasn’t really talked about. The business demanded long hours, constant attention, and a relentless drive to establish a strong company. Being the first bartending business in Arizona, we had to set the standards high and we were very conscious of that. I often found myself working late into the night, juggling various roles, and rarely taking time off despite the fact that I just got married and was starting a family.

Over the years, as the business grew and we became more established, I began to see the importance of balancing work with my personal life. The kids were getting older and needed more attention with school and sports. Then came the internet and digital tools. It allowed me to work more efficiently and use smarter marketing strategies. We implemented some very strong bartending systems so that without any guidance, the bartenders and servers would go above and beyond the customer service our clients were expecting. Everyone was on the same page with our services.

My approach today to work-life balance is much more deliberate. I recognize the importance of taking time for myself, my family, and my interests outside of work. This balance not only improves my well-being but also enhances my effectiveness to keep the standards we have set moving forward. Working around life and not living around work gave me and my family a better lifestyle.

And, with the introduction of our new division, Pour Masters Elite, I am more mindful of fostering a work environment that promotes creativity and excellence without overwhelming our staff. We make it fun and constantly enjoy developing new and creative ideas for our company.

While the early days required an all-in approach, the tools available today have enabled a healthier work-life balance. It’s something that all entrepreneurs need to work on so that they can enjoy life with their family and friends while making a living. Isn’t that the real reason why we all start a business?

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
From the beginning, I always believed that helping others was crucial to building your business. I have helped a few of my competitors with many meetings to discuss their issues that I have already experienced. We still talk to this day if they have any questions or ideas.

We sponsor many non-profits with their bar needs so they may fundraise without worrying about the bar expenses. They need to concentrate on keeping their donations, not spending them.

Giving back and helping others is the best way to grow your business. I understand that giving to others has mind, soul and health benefits.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, when my friends visit Arizona, the first thing you have to do is send them up in a hot air balloon. They view and experience is like nothing else. And, it’s always on their bucket list.

Then we would take a trip out to Wickenburg or Sedona and show them how beautiful Arizona is. When coming back from Sedona, we would stop to eat at Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon City for one of their famous pies.

Some of the other activities we would have them do is hike one of the beautiful mountains, stroll down the streets of Old Town Scottsdale and check out some AZ sporting events.

Our favorite restaurants to take them to eat are The Keg, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, The Parlor, Chelsea’s Kitchen and The Henry.

Living in Arizona for over 36 years. there are so many places to show off to our guests.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Some of the amazing books that help shape Pour Masters is The Go-Giver by Bob Burg, The E-Myth by Michael Gerber and Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza.

I have also been a member of the Parkside Lane Mastermind Group for over 10 years. They have help me immensely over the years.

And let’s not forget eating healthy and exercising to stay focused.
