We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn ODoul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think when you are a creative person its not really a choice. Its something you must do. I started out as a young child drawing and crafting everything. To finger paints to building forts. Then in high school a friend of mine let me set up a shot using her as a model and borrow her film camera because she was taking a photography class. I shot some 400iso Ilford and I loved the results. After that I haven’t turned back.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My creative portrait work is a bit outside the the standard box of regular portrait work. I strive to go way beyond what you can get from a point and shoot camera. I think I am still building my business. Nothing worth going after is easy. Getting over challenges is having a mental mind set that you don’t have a choice but to move forward. Being stuck doesn’t service your craft or the people around you in your life. The river is always flowing through,
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hopefully they would come out in the winter. If it was in November I would take them to Canal Convergence on the waterfront in Scottsdale, probably eat at Olive and Ivy after. I would take them Grand Ave and take them to Cha Cha tea house and check out some of the shops along that strip. I would take them to Phx Art Museum and SMOCA. Then go to Sedona for a hike and have traditional chai at The Chai Spot. I am vegan so I would take them to all my favorite eat spots like The Coronado, Whyld Ass, Verdura, Loving Hut and Nami.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had help primarily from my partner and my love Allan Dukes. He has drug heavy thrones through wooded forests with me to achieve a great shot. Used leaf blowers on peoples hair to get great hair action shots. Anything my crazy brain can think up he seems to dig in to help with that stuff. When Allan isn’t available I have had help from my friend John Kittelsrud who is a mad scientist type that build his own RC airplanes and build and modifies his own cameras. John is also a fantastic photographer. I have always been inspired by the greats like Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz, Man Ray, Cindy Sherman and so many more. I would devour publications with their work in it and look through fashion and art magazines for the most creative portraits.
