We had the good fortune of connecting with Diego Summers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diego, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. I can’t really picture a memory in my head where music hasn’t been involved in some way, or that I didn’t associate it with a song or an album. Music is such a powerful language where you can communicate a message without actually saying a single word. The ability to express feelings and emotions has always fascinated me and is one of the reasons why I am pursuing an artistic career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I always wanted to be able to write and perform my own songs. I remember playing Guitar Hero 3 for the first time and feeling like a rockstar. From there, it clicked in my head that I wanted to be a musical artist. Once I started to learn how to play the guitar, the dream of creating my own musical discography became very tangible. As I got better and better and picking up a couple different instruments along the way, I got a job at McDonalds to be able to save up for the hardware and software that I needed to produce these songs from my bedroom. I had all of the equipment necessary and I have this memory of how intimidated I was by all of the necessary steps to produce a full song. I didn’t let that fear stop me and just kept trying and trying until I got to a point to where I was producing finished tracks that I was proud of. It took a little bit of a push from my family, but after a few years of saving my paychecks and working on my craft, I released my first single “2Gether” and was motivated by the reaction of people asking me, “this is your song?” Now, I look back and just get filled with so much joy of how by just taking that first step and taking the initiative to find a way, I was able to write the songs I have out today and get closer to this dream.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely have to recommend to go eat either birria at El Güero Birria de Chivo, or having an awesome dinner at Barrio Queen. These are two of my favorite spots in town. I love going downtown and checking out live music in some sort or fashion, so I would look out for any events or live shows at the Valley Bar or the Van Buren. Finally, Arizona is such a beautiful place filled with great spots for hiking and just nature spots, so going to the Victory Steps at Verrado would be on the docket.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends have always been the driving force to my pursuit. I am fortunate enough to have the support from my family that have always pushed me to dream big. From buying my very first guitar, to supporting me at my local shows, my family have encouraged and motivated me to follow my passion. Seeing all of the people I loved and that cared about me at my first show opening for Audrey Nuna is a memory that I will never forget.
