We had the good fortune of connecting with Doug Klemann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Doug, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a Fire Fighter for 21 years, I wanted to be able to provide the community with a valuable service and an opportunity to provide jobs…as well as a positive place to work, while also securing my livelihood beyond the fire department.

What should our readers know about your business?
Being physically fit for my job, and as a former Personal Trainer, I know first-hand how important stretching is to your physical well-being. It is a common factor in almost all wellness modalities, such as exercise, Massage, Chiropractic, Yoga, Physical Therapy, and the like. So when I sought out a potential business concept, that was the direction I felt I needed to go. Stretching is necessary and safe for all body types and fitness levels, as it can be easily modified to adapt to personal limitations. After researching different business models, I found StretchMed® to be superior to the other stretch studios available. They have a proprietary 36-stretch full-body sequence and the educational requirements for their Certified Stretch Therapists™ exceed the competitor’s standards. That is certainly something to be proud of!
Getting started has not been easy. We have a great team at the moment, but like many business owners, finding quality staff has been a challenge, especially as we anticipate future growth. Our location is in downtown Tucson, which is exciting to be a part of local expansion efforts…but accessibility and growth have been limited to that area. We are looking forward to our future locations being more centrally located. The economy is also a factor with housing and gas prices causing our community to limit their spending.
But we believe that our ideal clientele makes their health a priority and will recognize the value of our service!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We can definitely recommend lots of options near us in Downtown Tucson. We have amazing restaurants like Reiley’s Pizza, HUB Restaurant & Ice Creamery, and Cup Cafe at the Congress Hotel. There are also several breweries close by like Crooked Tooth, Thunder Canyon, Borderlands, and Pueblo Vida. Our local museums are worth checking out like the Tucson Museum of Art, the University of Arizona Museum of Art, The Arizona History Museum, and many others. If you want to enjoy the outdoors during our cooler months, there is the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, Mount Lemmon, and the Pima Air Museum.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Jennica. She has been an inspiration as a business owner for 11 years, and her support and guidance have been invaluable. She listens and understands what it’s like to start a business. She has been able to prepare me and offers advice, or resources when needed. She is also able to maintain the work/life balance at home.
