We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. April Givens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. April, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is that we all go through similar experiences in life. It does not matter your race or culture we all experience similar trials and tribulations. We all are more alike than different. As a psychotherapist who counsels many different people from different cultures and races I enjoy seeing the similarities among us all. I really enjoy my career and I learn so much from my clients. I am happy to be a motivation and guide for them in their time of need.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love to refer to myself as a general psychotherapist because I am trained in many different modalities and it is too many to name and add to my title. Before I entered the field of mental health and therapy, I was a certified nursing assistant, I received my bachelor of science degree in Biology/Pre-Medicine, I worked in corporate america in the restaurant industry, in the airline industry, in a food plant, and trucking plant. I later went back to school and received my masters in mental health counseling and began working in managed care clinics, behavioral health organizations, courts, and medical insurance companies. I started my own private practice and began working in it full time doing individual counseling, couples counseling, corporate speaking events, and business coaching and consultations for different brands. I am also a content creator and love to provide psycho-education on social media about mental health and wellness. I am trained in hypnotherapy, herbal medicine, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, and trauma therapy. I use a holistic approach when seeing clients. I also served 8 years in the Army. What sets me apart from others is I bring life experiences into my profession and I am authentic. I meet people where they are and truly believe with the right tools people can change,

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to cafe monarch in scottsdale to eat because I love to dress up. I would also hang out at the desert botanical gardens and the Phoenix zoo.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my family, my closest friends, clients, and new acquaintances that I have met along the way for my success. I also want to thank the book “Ask and it is Given” by Esther and Jerry Hicks. This book has been pivotal to my journey and understanding of who I am as a person and loving myself first. I came across this book at a time when I had experienced a breakup and after reading it my life changed completely. I began to implement things in my life that would lead me to where I am today. The book teaches you that you attract the things in life that you want and that essentially you can create your own reality.
