We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew Port & Alex Wasserman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Drew Port &, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Surprisingly, the answer to this question is actually quite simple. We both have a strong passion for traveling coupled with passions for videography and photography. If you put these three things together you get a travel content creator. As we were both about to graduate from Arizona State University in 2020, with requirements for more schooling based on our degrees, we realized that more school was the complete opposite of what we actually wanted. So, we had a discussion, realized these shared passions, and acted upon them, leaving to travel full-time only a few months later.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Through our art (or content), we strive to show unique, adventurous and cultural experiences. This can be anything from spending the day with a Mayan family in Guatemala to visiting an extremely rural village in Peru to attempting to summit a mountain at 19,000 ft. These experiences require us to reach outside of our comfort zone, often times having a deep experience or moment with a stranger who barely speaks the same language as us (except Alex now speaks Spanish which was one simple way to overcome the language challenge). This experiences show us and our audience that the world is a lot safer and more welcoming that you would otherwise think– that we are all the same, with the same exact struggles and triumphs, living a strangely human experience. Yet, for us, achieving this success was not easy and continues to be challenging to this day. Yet, the harder we strive to show these pillars through our art, the more rewarded we are.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I guess it depends where we are in the world! Lets just saw we were in Colombia. In that week, we would recommend making it a goal to see as much of the nature and culture as possible. We could start in Bogota for three days, playing Tejo and eating Arepas. Then, we can go to Cartegena to see the stunning cultural center and go to the somewhat nearby Tyrona National Park to interact with the indigenous peoples of that area. The remainder of the trip can be split between Salento in the Coffee Region and the famous Medellin, visiting waterfalls and spending time with local people.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest shoutout we have to give is to our other travel creator friends. People like Ryan Fila (@filaforreal), Crosby Melendi (@crosbygracetravels), Nikki Tomlin (@nikkiitomlin), Eric & Sarah (@thebomsaway). These people constantly give us inspiration, motivation and encouragement and without this strong support base that we have built over the past year, we do not know where we would be today.
