We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwight Hargett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dwight, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was tired of working in sales teams for services or products that did not do what they claimed. I wanted to believe in what I was doing and use my skills to serve my community the best way I could and that, for me, meant teaching martial arts to kids and adults.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Patriot Jiu-Jitsu is an amazing story to me because I had a good position, I was making good money and as the family breadwinner(my wife is a nurse but cares for our cancer survivor daughter who has Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome) so money was definitely a factor. Having learned that the company I was working for had been training us to lie to customers I knew I had to leave immediately. I started Patriot Jiu-Jitsu as a way to earn some additional income while I planned my next move. What happened next was astonishing. We grew so fast that we almost ran out of room in the space we were renting. Here’s why I believe that happened. The world we live in today is drowning in fear and hate. My purpose in training kids and adults is to prepare them for hardship ahead. We all will experience hardship in our lives and I believe martial arts has helped me learn to build important skills such as discipline, teamwork, courage and grit as well as self defense so that we can be confident in the face of fear and overcome the obstacles we face. That is what I try my best to share with my students. In hopes that if situations worsen, we can join together as a community to protect and serve each other. That is what I want the world to know. I want them to know that turning off the television and training a skill with your neighbors is what we as Americans need right now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve recently had one of my best friends come to visit so that is easy. I live in the small mother town of Southern Utah called Parowan. We are surrounded by beauty! Gorgeous mountains, lakes, hunting and fishing spots, campgrounds, rock hounding and shed hunting areas. There’s a beautiful place that I proposed to my wife at called Cedar Breaks. The nearby town of Cedar City is a little busier and the town of festivals. There’s almost always something going on whether it’s a monster truck rally, a rodeo or even a sheep parade. This place is sure to keep you occupied for years if you love the outdoors as much as I do.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my friend, training partner, and mentor, JohnnyMac. This guy wakes up at 3:30am to drive an hour to train with me and has shared so much of his wisdom with me as far as business and relationships are concerned. Patriot Jiu-Jitsu would not be what it is today without him. Thank you JohnnyMac!
