We had the good fortune of connecting with E.S. Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi E.S., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first started writing, I didn’t think about “writing” as a business. Obviously, though, the writing resulted in a product that I wanted to sell. So even though all the processes were there – development, production, sales, and marketing – for some reason, the correlation didn’t initially click. Once I had my first book in my hands, though – an actual physical printed copy where I could admire the vibrancy of the artwork on the cover, feel the crispness of the fresh pages with my fingers, and take in the uniquely euphoric fragrance that only a new book provides – it all became very real and I knew that what I did next was up to me. At that moment I realized the only way I would be profitable as a writer was if I treated the production and sales side like the business it was. And this excited me! I have a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis on marketing, and many years of experience marketing and promoting items in various jobs I’ve had, so I was very excited to be able to apply my knowledge and skills to my own business of selling my books!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love sci-fi, action, adventure, and comic book movies and television programs. My earliest memory of seeing a movie in a theatre was my parents taking me to see the original Star Wars in 1977. I, like most others I’m sure, was in awe from the opening moments when the starships streaked overhead, firing their lasers, and looking and sounding like they were real, making me feel like I was witnessing an actual event rather than what could have been a cheesy 70s sci-fi flick. I knew from those opening moments that I wanted to create stories that took people to other worlds and sucked them into universes where they would never want to leave. So when I write, I imagine my stories unfolding on a big screen and I try and translate that experience to the page. I want my readers to have a bucket of popcorn sitting next to them while they’re reading because they feel like they’re in a theatre watching the movie along with hundreds of others, taking in the experience together, laughing, and cheering at all the right times. That’s the experience I work to achieve when I write and what I hope sets me apart from others. I’ve had readers tell me that reading my books is like watching a movie, and those are always the biggest compliments because I feel like I achieved what I was striving for.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Washington State and the Pacific Northwest in general. There’s so much to experience. Washington is relatively unique in that so many major climates and varied geography are represented. That said, I’ll preface this by saying I’m not much of a cold-weather person, so my ideas take place during the summer! Eastern Washington is beautiful for its more desert-like climate and smaller cities and towns, so a day spent driving and visiting spots on that side of the state would be warranted. And if there happens to be a concert occurring at the Gorge Amphitheatre, all the better! I’ve never attended a concert there where the artist on stage hasn’t declared the amphitheatre to be one of the, if not the most beautiful, places they’ve ever performed. Sticking a bit with nature, a visit to Snoqualmie Falls would be required, not only for the beauty of the falls but to take in the nearby town of North Bend where Twin Peaks (one of my all-time favorite television shows) was filmed. And, of course, I absolutely love the city of Seattle. I would hope we could take in a Sounders match and a trip to the top of the iconic Space Needle would definitely be in order. Along the way on any day, there are numerous local restaurants that are beyond compare. We would need more than a week!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s difficult to narrow the list down! I’d like to give a shoutout to a couple of people if that’s okay? The first would be to my good friend Brent Snowden. We go back many, many years. He’s put up with a lot from me and helped me through some very difficult times. The other would be Patricia Carrigan, whom I originally only knew as a fellow author, but who has become a cool friend. I feel that her’s and my journeys as authors have been very similar in how much we are dedicated, or not, to the craft at any given time. I know I can always rely on her if I need inspiration or help when I’m writing. I’ve very lucky to know her! I’ve put both Brent and Patricia in my books and killed them both off. Maybe that’s not saying much about our friendships? Truthfully, though, I hope they both know how much I love and appreciate them!
