We had the good fortune of connecting with Edwina Curtis Alarcon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Edwina, what do you attribute your success to?
Holding myself accountable has been my recipe for success. If I promise something; I do my absolute best to deliver. When you work for someone else there is always a possibility to be able to blame someone else. When it’s just me, there’s only myself to hold accountable. So I gladly do just that.

Other factors are when I do a consultation, I listen and observe. I want to make sure that I understand what the client wants and why. It ensures that I present what the client was requesting.

I also surround myself with successful people who have similar goals to mine, or who have obtained what I’m attempting to achieve.

And last, but not least, I say YES a lot. I know from experience that magical things happen when you participate in life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My fine art is energy art. I have no game plan when I start a piece. The only two requirements that I have are that I have a color palette and a canvas. As I go through the process I let the art “speak” to me and guide me on what I should do next.

I am just as excited as the viewer to see what gets created. I can loose myself for hours in my creations because they are energy pieces that pull you in. It’s meditative to do it and meditative to view it. I love that people can actually use them for beneficial purposes, like a tool for mediation.

I suffer from childhood scoliosis and I spent a lot of time immobile. During that time I would draw. As I started to feel better, I moved onto bigger projects. At first I could only see how I could make my art better, but in time I saw that there was more than that. I was actually creating beautiful art.

My biggest hurdle was believing that my art was worthy of being seen. So I decided to take the leap and share it with the public. In building my businesses, I had to create branding, websites, set up all the small business prerequisites, etc. I feel like anyone can do anything in this technologically advanced environment because all the answers are just a Google search away.

If you enjoy adventure, you’ll enjoy being an entrepreneur because it’s a journey of self discovery. What are you made of? What can you accomplish? What lengths are you willing to go to achieve your goals? The growth (the good times and the bad) are where the best lessons are.

As a lover of art, I have an appreciation of other artists work, and what I learned is their art isn’t perfect either. The most important thing is that their art speaks. Now I’ve given my art a voice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Tucson is GORGEOUS! I would take them for a ride through Gates Pass and then have lunch at the Seis Kitchen in the Mercado District. And of course, we’d have to stop by La Estrella for some pastels.

We could ride through Tucson and see and the stunning and colorful murals by Fin Dacc, Jessica Gonzales, Joe Pagac and others.

Of course we would have dinner on 4th Avenue at Ermanos Bar and take a trip into the Portal (a hidden lounge). Walk off the delicious meal and see rustic and trendy Tucson flair (like the Hippie Gypsy) and IBTs.

A trip to the Botanical Gardens is a perfect space to enjoy the desert and what it has to offer in an artistic environment.

There are so many wonderful experiences to be had in the Old Pueblo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love that you ask who deserves credit for my success because the truth is I wouldn’t be anything without the support, encouragement and constant love of my people. Bruno has been my constant rock. And my adult children (Evauna & Dezirae) are ridiculously encouraging.

One of my greatest teachers, that completely changed the trajectory of my life is my soul sister, Ali. She taught me about the power of words and energy work. She opened my eyes to another way of seeing and living in this world and it’s been a blast since.

Some of my favorite reads are: The Secret, The Four Agreements and Big Magic,
